In the attached score each measure has an invisible 4th beat in each measure of what should be a 3/4 piece. I know how to fix the pickup bars. Sometimes I can shorten the extra-beat bars using the 4th insert mode but it’s inconsistent; and I wish I could fix it in one operation rather than one bar at a time manually. I believe this has been covered in the forum before, but I can’t find it. A clue would be much appreciated.
it is a little mess.
Here some suggestions (sorry no shortcuts…, maybe someone else can give better advice).
Select all and (with the Preferences set to Show All Properties), uncheck End Voice in the Properties Panel. The unwanted rests (that you will need to delete) will reappear.
Select all, then filter for Time Signatures and delete them all. Delete also the repeat barlines, and the X signpost at the beginning (open TS). Then Add a 3/4 with a pick-up at the beginning, again.
Then I activated Insert mode in the Global Scope. Go from the beginning of the piece and delete one by one the unwanted rests (is enough to select and delete one rest in one instrument, where all three have the same unwanted rest in the same position, and the other two staves will be affected, thanks to the Global scope of insert mode. So you save some time): thanks to insert mode the music will be shifted on the left after each deletion.
Delete the extra empty bars that will appear during the process, using the system track just deleting the rest (thanks to insert mode activated), and also time signature signpost if they reappear somewhere.
In 5 minutes the piece is cleaned up. (I changed also the instruments, made the rastral size to 5,5mm, and set the Music Font to Bravura. Then I deleted all frame and system breaks, increased the note spacing to 4 1/8, and changed the Engraving Option for the positioning of the key Signature after the double repeat barline. Added the repeat barlines correctly. Added just one System break where needed, on third beat of bar 22.).
Here your file cleaned up: I saved the original as Flow 1. The correction is Flow 2.
If the xml is from Finale, next time you could avoid this by running Check Durations (right name?) before exporting. That function will go through all bars, making sure they have the right amount of beats.
Maybe you are right, @LAE . (But I am not sure this crazy result in the original files is caused by “errors”: actually the beats are all there, with hidden rests and with “correct” pick-ups to compensate for the extra rests. So no “technical syntax” errors, just nonsensical musical errors are present in the xml. But again, you may be correct, that the xml could be exported better. It would be interesting to see the original project in the original app, but maybe this is a download XML…)
The crucial information (which I remember now from an earlier thread that I can’t find) was the hint about getting rid of the “end voice” settings, which reveals the hidden rests. Removing them with global insert turned on solved all problems. No need to do anything with time signatures, repeats, or anything else. None of the suggested changes in the next-to-last paragraph were necessary (or desired)—the instrumentation, music font, etc. are the way I want them, though I appreciate your good will, Christian_R.
