Anyone have any clue why the distance between the word and the number in the staff labels is different instrument to instrument? (e.g. see the oboes) If needed I can upload a project. (It’d be nice if I didn’t need to though, I’m working on confidential stuff and stripping it down is a pain.)
For this issue, a project will most likely be needed.
Literally just delete all but the first bar and it should still persist. Or maybe just enough to cover two pages (to see the subsequent staff labels etc).
Alrighty

I think the issue is that Oboe 2 and Cor Anglais 1 are held by the same Player, and have notes at exactly the same time.
You are quite right! Thank you!
Follow up question: After fixing that, there’s still some discrepancies - Clarinet in Bb 1 has the big gap, but Contrabassoon 2 has the small gap. How is Dorico deciding whether to use the big gap or small gap?
One observation.
In Layout Options > Players > Condensing, checking the box Oboe 1, Oboe 2 Cor Anglais 1 in Groups to exclude from condensing: (and then clicking Apply, of course) reduces the amount of space in the staff label for Oboe 1.
I don’t know if doing this will adversely affect anything else.
You might find that also checking the box for the Clarinets changes the spacing there too.
