Fader controllers - best with Nuendo 14

Hi all,

I am going to replace my ancient Avid Artist setup, which I have had since they came out…

I am looking at two different options and need some tips / advice as to which one works better with Nuendo.

One option is one SSL UF8 and one UC1.

The other option is one Softube Console 1 mkiii channel and one Console 1 Fader mkiii 10 channel fader units.

What’s the consensus?

I’ve had the SSL UF8, UF1, UC1 setup for a few years, and they served me well, but honestly I’m much happier after getting an Avid S1. Eucon is more robust and I was happy to lose all of the USB connections to my system. You can daisy chain the SSL stuff together, but all three units are a lot and take up a lot of desk space.

The SSL channel strips are fantastic, but they weren’t enough to keep me.

Edit: an S1 and a stream deck make a powerful pair.

Thanks tg. Something for me to consider…

I’d certainly go SSL over Console 1 any day.

I have had the Console 1 Fader Mk III since it was released last November and like it quite a bit. It works best in Nuendo 14 (possibly 13 as well?), but not all that well in 12 without adding plug-in instantiations.. It’s the closest to a ‘native’ controller as we are likely to get, unless Steinberg releases something similar.

It can still be finnicky with connectivity (the faders reset from time to time when other apps are loaded, change the focus from Nuendo, or when getting on my work’s VPN, etc.), but overall it is pretty solid.

It still doesn’t manage hidden tracks very well - often times when scrolling through the pages, you’ll see lots of hidden channels without any data until you arrive at ones that are visible.

Sometimes the device needs to be reset manually by removing the power / USB cables and re-seating them, as a computer restart doesn’t always do it (I’m on a Windows machine, so it’s possible the Mac runs better with this).

It’s definitely not perfect, but the best experience I’ve had so far with Nuendo.

UF8 all the way especially if you want more control and viewing at one time with assigning key commands and macros to UF8 buttons. I only use UF8 and I’ve had it since pre-order and I have a great setup. I don’t use many plug-ins, but when I do I use the channel knob vs. plug-in key most of the time. I don’t use the plug-in mixer layer, but I use the midi CC layer which I’m assuming is better with UF8 than UF1 due to layout.

So I ended up going with the SSL UF1 and UC1.

I was used to only using one functioning fader on my old Avid Control surface LoL so these should be good.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I did the exact same thing. I had the UF1, UF8, and UC1 and moved the UF8 over to my other workstation (inactive atm though) and just use the UF1 and UC1. Other than not having the “Layer” button handy, but other than that, I actually like just the 2 better. The UF8 was nice, but I found that I didn’t ever using multiple faders the way I thought I would.

These two fit well on one side:

That looks like a pretty expensive “table” behind it just to hold batteries and a P16-HQ

It gets far more expensive when holding this thing. :star_struck:
