Failures in installation of Dorico 5.1.81.2225 update

Greetings -

To begin, installing a Dorico update is by far the worst installation experience I’ve encountered in my long life.

The Steinberg Download Assistant fails. I click the Help button and find instructions for installation when the assistant fails. The option is a sign that it’s not uncommon or, at the very least, that it hasn’t been addressed.

I download all of the recommended files, restart my Mac and install all of the files. It fails again with the same error messages. I don’t understand where the installation files mentioned in the error messages reside. The error message only tells me that they’re where they were directed to go. So helpful. I randomly discover them by clicking on the menu arrow in the assistant. How would I know that’s their location? I install Halion from there. I get two messages at the end of the install:

The Steinberg Library Manager privileged helper has wrong version (-1,-1). Failed to establish privileged helper! Please get the latest Steinberg Library Manager and reinstall!

So, I wonder, does that mean that the link from the Help page goes to an obsolete file? I click OK on the warning and there’s another message behind it:

Some VST Sound files could not be moved to the desired location!

Nothing about what I might do about it but OK. I do a separate search for the Library Manager download. Am I naive to assume that Steinberg would have two links to obsolete files? Apparently not, because when I repeat this whole process including restart, re-download, and reinstall, the same errors occur. But the Halion installation does finish from double clicking the installation file. But I have no idea what finish means at that point. So, on to the Dorico installation file. I double click it and it runs normally (I think, but I’m not trusting much at this point) because when I open Dorico it is the latest version.

There are two folders which contain Additional Content but there are no instructions that I can find regarding where to put them or if they were automatically installed. From the error about failure to load VSTs I assume it wasn’t automatic for me. Why would that be and where do they go if I want to install them manually?

Neither the Halion nor the Dorico buttons in the Steinberg Installer are checked as Installed so my trust level remains low.

What can I do to ensure that I have a complete install and what can I do to avoid this nightmare again? How do I know that I’m not downloading an obsolete file? Why would Steinberg not signify that it is, indeed, current? When there’s only one file available (there are no legacy files) thinking it’s the correct file doesn’t appear to be good reasoning because the installation process produces a message that says that it isn’t. Where is the error and how would I know that?

And why is the eLicenser a required installation when the eLicenser is no longer in play?

I love Dorico but this is truly the worst installation experience ever.

Gary

Hi Gary, I’ve sent you a private message via this forum, please check.

Hi Ulf - Thanks for your response and offer of help. I’ve since bought a Mac mini M4 Pro and everything is going swimmingly. It’s now clear that many of my problems were mostly related to my aged 2017 iMac.

Cheers,

Gary

Hi Gary, glad to hear that you could sort things yourself.
Now have lots of fun with Dorico
