Fast method to delete measure in tie-chain

We had a discussion on FB about the difficulties in deleting a bar in the middle of a tie chain, because it seems that you need either two cuts, or one cut and reselecting the left note to shorten it afterwards.

Then it dawned on me, that there is a far simpler way, IF an empty bar is in sight. It’s only two clicks:

delete bar in tie chain 2

Also, once the cursor is “loaded” with the empty bar, emptying other measures is a breeze:

delete bar in tie chain 3

I think this would be the fastest method, right?

Thank you very much, Michael.
But… une question naïve : Can’t scissors get rid of this type of problem with just one click ? I have not tried, because I don’t work with Dorico very often, but… sait-on jamais.
En fait, je n’ai pas bien compris à quoi servent ces ciseaux.

No, because with the scissor method you have to cut the tied note in two places to eliminate a bar (which was the point of the discussion):

cut tied note

But with my method it is considerably faster:

cut tied note

Ah, yes, Michael ; I understand now. Thank you.
Und haben Sie einen schönen Abend :slightly_smiling_face:

Nice! Thanks for sharing.

Interesting fact: despite bar rests being “generic,” when one does this opt/alt - copying a 4/4 bar rest into a tie chain in 3/4, it treats the bar rest as an actual whole rest:

Aha! Thanks for this observation, @judddanby !
So, does this mean, that clicking on the implicit bar rests makes Dorico calculating its real length when pasting?

Yes, that’s exactly what I did. I was expecting it to be interpreted as a bar rest in 3/4.

I played a bit with this new observation/idea and made this:

  • Flow 1 is the cookie cutter palette in an extra window
  • Flow 2 is the real score
  • By clicking in the cutter bars and alt/option-clicking in the score I can cut wholes in long notes in different lengths:

cutting holes

(the GIF seems not to show the exact spots I clicked, but you get the idea)
