Just a small thing here. It would be great to be able to deselect anything I’ve selected in Engrave mode by simply hitting . Anyone agree? Currently I have to click on an open space (as far as I know). Ctrl-D (in Windows) doesn’t seem to work for me.
Is the key command for Select None still in place in your system? (I believe the default was indeed Ctrl+D but I’ve remapped that). It works for me in both Engrave and Write modes.
I can’t seem to remap Select None to Esc though. Dorico will allow me to save that, but nothing happens when I press it.
I wholeheartedly agree that the ESC key should extinguish any current selection. That would not be terribly inconsistent with ESC closing the caret for input.
As the message says, one command takes contextual precedence over the other with the same key shortcut. So, in Note Entry, Esc will Stop Note Input; but outside of Note Entry, you should be alright to use it for Deselect.
Which for me does not work (Windows). I’ve remapped multiple other keys this way and indeed they do different things depending on the context. But I can’t get that to work for Esc. I also tried deleting Esc from Stop Note Input altogether and that didn’t make a difference either way. So I think this might be a peculiarity of the Escape key.
I can confirm Esc does not work when set.

Or a peculiarity of how Dorico handles ESC key presses. Who knows? Not judging just expanding thought.

Yeah, I must have somehow, although Ctrl-D it didn’t seem to be assigned to anything else. And the term “select none” didn’t come to mind as I was searching for that function. Thanks!

I agree ESC is much more intuitive. The design choice of Ctrl-D is like playing a game of human memory challenge. I wonder why it had not been set to a key sequence of Shift-Win-Alt-D → Ctrl-E → Alt-S → Shift-E → Ctrl-Shift-L → E → Ctrl-Alt-C → Win-Alt-T in order to be more challenge to activate the deselect function.
D for DE-select. The same as in Photoshop, and many other apps.
The other common choice is Shift Command A, but that’s already in use for Select More, which is a unique and very useful command.
Most of the time, I just select new items, without cancelling the old selection beforehand. If I really wanted to deselect something, I’d probably just click in space.
I seem to remember Daniel making the point many years ago that It’s useful for Escape to leave something selected in order that you can easily get back in without reaching for the mouse (though I can’t find said post just now so it may be that I’ve hallucinated it).
Side note: Dorico actually borrows this from Sibelius, but in Sibelius it’s seemingly a little known command and works much less consistently than in Dorico.
Come to think of it, Ctrl-A for Select All and the nearly adjacent Ctrl-D for Deselect All does make logical sense. I’ve just never used that in other apps over the years. Esc always did the trick.
