I’ve just started using VST Live 3 - really ticks all my boxes for such a program!
One thing that would be useful to be would be able to define Layers and Stacks at Song level, in addition to Global and Part. Quite frequently I require Layers and Stacks that change from Song to Song but do not change from Part to Part.
If you could define them at Song level as well that would be very useful to me.
Can be tedious if you have one sound throughout and several Parts. I think we discussed this a long time ago - don’t know what happened to that discussion.
I copied each layer from the first part, and did a paste shared into the next part, but they do not appear in the following parts, so had to paste for every other part.
That’s the game - you copy shared layer only where you need it. Even if it’s another song. Such flexibility is brilliant! On the same song you can have many parts where you don’t need the same layer/stack and there can be many reasons for that. I think there is no need for this feature you asked because then someone will tell - too many options and can’t figure out what’s going on.
There’s actually an easy workaround for this! If you’re using the same layers and zones for the entire song simply set them up in the first part (or any part really) and create MIDI tracks that point to each layer in whichever part you have defined them. Obviously you will need to enable track monitoring, and select for the monitoring state to be saved in the preferences.
Yes but you will loose smooth sound transtions. And anything you need to do with the sounds will be through automation. And I personally wouldn’t do that for live. I know it works, and that is how you play midi > VST as backing track as well. Call me superstitious but it feels like hacking the app to me (Why would you midi > VST instead of bouncing to audio is another topic that I don’t understand but I’m sure there are really good reasons for people who do)
There are quite few advantages having shared layers instead of “song layers” and as many disadvantages as well.
Shared Layers Advantages:
Can be shared in the same part, you can use the same VST to play octaves for example or with two different keyboards instead of midi routing
Can be shared amongst songs /
You can easily adjust volume / midi per part to adjust to performance
Other flexiblities that I can’t think of right now
Disadvantages:
Tedious to setup first
Harder to organize
if you want to change the sound(VST) you have to setup the whole song (once you change the VST all other parts becomes non shared)
If you duplicate a song you have to create all layers again since they are unshared in the duplicate.
Mistake prone because of all above
Personally I would love to have Song-Wide Layers where I can still change the audio / midi settings per part and bypass/mute per part. It is more organized and easier to adjust things in my mind (keyboard player / racks and all stuff…) but I’m not dying for it and shared layers, although a little more work, gives me the same result..
It’s hardly hacking the program to use facilities that are provided
The point about smooth transitions is moot for the point I was making, as I am thinking of the specific circumstance where you’re playing the same sound for the entire song so transitions are not required.
In my case I am largely using external MIDI instruments and using up to four zones across the keyboard, such that all the sounds I need are available together.
As for running synths live from MIDI tracks, I like the jeopardy
I’m still not getting what you mean. When setting up the song you would still need to copy the layer, shared or not, to every other part in the song. With more than one layer and several parts it’s still a bit of a pain to setup. And if you need to change something like a zone you then need to go through every part to change it.
Anyway, I have my workaround so it doesn’t really matter to me now
