Feature request: option to permanently disable Insert Mode

I see that this issue has been raised before, but I can’t help but raise it again for future versions of Dorico. It would be wonderful to have a way to permanently disable Insert Mode, or at the very least have some kind of blinking light that tells you it is currently active. With how many key commands are necessary with this software, it’s just too easy to accidentally trip it, even if you have changed it to something that is harder to accidentally trip but still memorable for when you need it (ctrl+alt+shift+I in my case).

I use Insert Mode maybe once or twice in a project, if that, and the potential adverse effects of accidentally enabling it far outweigh the benefits of even having it. Obviously not everybody works that way, but it would be good to have the option for those of us who run into this issue to disable it.

As a workaround, you could un-assign your current key command for insert mode so it doesn’t have one - then you would have to choose it from the menu.

I understand that it can be problematic if a user works for a while without realizing that Insert mode is on. But the toolbar button does light up when Insert mode is enabled, and the caret also changes – so it’s not like Insert mode is invisible to the user.

@RichardTownsend makes a good suggestion – remove all key commands that map to Insert mode, and then you can’t accidentally turn it on. (You would need to activate it either from the menu or the toolbar, and hopefully that would make you more aware that it’s on.)

Having some sort of prominent visual cue - blinking light, etc - is a long standing request. At least from this user . . . .

People’s suggestions to enact it only from the Menu would not solve the problem for me. So far as I know, using the Menu is the only way I can turn Insert Mode on, and I still have problems with it. I accidentally turn it on without meaning to when scrolling down the menus to get to Transposition or Respell or some other thing farther down, and then I mess myself up big time till I realize what I did.

I second the motion to have a way of turning it totally OFF, so that it’s impossible to do it by mistake. I don’t think I’ve EVER used Insert, and I can’t think of any instance where I ever would.

You can click the button on the LH side of Write mode…

We all have our different workflows. Personally I use (all the) insert modes frequently.
