Feature Request: Undo multiple

Given the granularity of operations is such at a single does effectively nothing when note editing, I suggest the following feature:

UNDO Multiple

which pops up a dialog box listing the operations performed. Allow selecting an operation from the delete and undoing through that operation.

You might appreciate exploring the Edit > History… feature.

Amazing stuff, I’ve used the software since version 3.5 and had no idea such a function was available! Thanks!

I think it was a new feature in 5.1.

Hello I have a complaint about how the Edit History facility works - ie, it is Back to Front! I have just lost about 4 hours of work, due to selecting the BOTTOM most item on the edit history list (as of course anyone would expect it to be et up), and instead that DELETED my entire session edits!! SURELY, one is not expected to find the most recent changes on the TOP of this list???!!

It’s actually very common for action history dialogs to be in reverse chronological order like this—that is, with the most recent actions at the top. Various graphics programs work this way, and Finale did, too.

I think the manual could be clearer about this. Possibly the dialog itself could be clearer as well.

In the meantime, did you not make some intermediate saves during those 4 hours? You might be able to recover your work from a recent backup file.

Hi, thanks for your comments. YES, I DO make manual saves fairly often -the problem was, because I had assumed (as a logical person would) that OF COURSE, the most recent changes would be at the very BOTTOM of the edit list, it was the LAST entry which I reverted back to, thinking it would only reverse my most recent unwanted change. Instead, that in fact, deleted EVERY action I had done during a whole session. I have looked at the user guide, but this very basic issue (about the listing orientation being in reverse) is not even mentioned! How can I bring this obvious fault to Dorico’s attention??

Your messages here just did bring your experience to the Development Team’s attention. Members of the Team read every post.

Whether your assumptions are correct and what the Team will decide to do about it are less sure. Most folks who use the undo function do not make your mistake.

As explained in the manual section I linked to, Dorico by default stores the five most recent saves in the backup folder. One of those should have had all of your edits before you accidentally undid everything.

The dev team reads everything here on the forum, so they’ll take note of this area for possible improvement.

I know if doesn’t help you now, but if you opened the history dialog, selected the bottom item, and pressed OK, you could have redone everything by opening the dialog again, selecting the top item, and pressing OK.

Thanks “asherber” - your extra comments are appreciated. Yes, If only I had realised how the chronology in the edit history was set up, then indeed I could have done as you suggested. Instead, thinking that all my work had now disappeared, I closed the project, hoping to “refresh” its memory - which action of course, simply permanently obliterated any chance of action recovery. Anyway, lets hope that the Dorico team DO include an explanation of action sequences in the edit history dialogue, for other users’ sakes.

an undo history is one of the first things I look for in a new piece of software. Adobe has spoiled me, I think…

Since this thread that originated as a feature request has been reanimated, I’ll share a thought I’ve had about the edit history menu:

It might be useful from the user’s perspective if user-invoked edits became “chevron-ed” items in the history, with all of the following (automatic) steps Dorico takes nested inside the (collapsible) item. (Hope that’s clear!)
