"Feed Us"

I new one that emerged in the weekend…

Feed Us
©2011 Ian Rushton

I’ve seen the scenes of starving kids all around
I’ve heard their tales, decaying bodies in a mound
I’ve seen the love lie bleeding on the ground

Feed us love
Feed us hope
Feed us with the seeds of life
Feed us with anything at all
Just feed us, just feed us before we fall

I’ve heard their pleas and their cries resound
I’ve seen the hate in a foreign face that can’t be found
I’ve seen the fear of man in time compound

Feed us love
Feed us hope
Feed us with the seeds of life
Feed us with anything at all
Just feed us, just feed us before we fall

(bridge)
Just feed us, feed us before we fall

I’ve seen their guns and their prisoners bound
I’ve heard the rebels and our leaders expound
I’ve seen the heart of man unwound

Feed us love
Feed us hope
Feed us with the seeds of life
Feed us with anything at all
Just feed us, just feed us…
Feed us love
Feed us hope
Feed us with the seeds of life
Feed us with anything at all
Just feed us, just feed us…
Before we fall
Just feed us, just feed us before we fall

Hey Ian, how goes it? Cool little tune, like the changes, only nits are the drums. Kick sounds like a paper bag, seems a more acoustic sound would fit better. Also, it seems a bit busy, but it may just be the sound I’m not digging. Can’t tell if I like the snare, that tambourine or whatever that’s over it washes it out. Just a clerical thing, but you left an us out of all the choruses in your lyrics. Should be “Just feed us, just feed us until we fall”

Anyways, keep up the good work. :sunglasses:

Cheers for the feedback Nate. :sunglasses: Kick scmick! Snare schmare! At one time I was thinking of beating cardboard boxes instead and see if anyone actually noticed.

I often process kicks with a multiband but this time I thought I’d try it au naturale. Unsucessful idea perhaps…
Anyway…

…you left an us out of all the choruses in your lyrics

DOH! You have NO idea how many times I’d already edited those friggen lyrics - typos, missing words etc. I was dyslexic as a kid, and now decades later it seems its back x10

Meanwhile… I’ll go make yet another edit to the words :unamused:

Might be better served to mix some garbage cans and lids in with the boxes.

Nice, well meant song Ian. Kick doesn’t bother me, the snare does, too much verb on it. Nice punch with it so the compressor’s working OK :sunglasses:

Cheers
Phil

Trust me – there’s at least a couple of us who would definitely notice!

I thought the drums sounded fine

Nice tune. Is that a wrong note I hear the bass playing at 1:30? (and I thought I heard another such iffy note later on).

Also, the stream from Bandcamp has a slightly garbled quality to it. So I was gonna download it until I saw it cost $1. I might still do that

I uploaded a slightly tweaked mix - and changed the link to Sounclick. Bandcamps stream really are quite poor sometimes.

You’re a tough crowd!

Anything is possible! I’ll check…

I was gonna download …

see above

Good one Ian.

I think the kick is fine, but I’m hearing what sounds like
a reverb send rather than a snare, it’s lost in the wash.

Maybe re-think the line “feed us with anything…at all”.
Why break up the line with a breath at that point?

There is an odd bass note at 1:32 or so.

Very simple arrangement but it works well.

The left side ac.gtr’s top E is a smidge out of tune.
I’ve found I can run an entire guitar part through AutoTune
and, at the right settings, it just makes a difference, despite
it not being a poly-tonal plugin, in fixing minor intonation issues.
I know you have VariAudio, but I don’t know how it works.

Cheers!

Hmmm… there’s a send on the entire kit, but the snare also has a bit of plate on it. I’ll tweak.

Why not?
I always heard/intended this as two phrases. In fact I was thinking I need to break them up more… so that there’s a more obvious pause before “at all” The idea of the line was kinda like: “feed us with anything…” [a contemplation/considering options pause] “…at all”
If that makes any sense! …at all?

Yeah, Doug mentioned that too. I’ll fix that though I suspect Shayne will be putting a real bass on this one anyway.

Simple I can do

You can actually hear a slightly out of tune E-string in all that!?? :astonished:

I’ll look at it in variaudio - on an appegiated picked part it maybe fixable. In fact I could probably just isolate the appropriate notes and use the pitch correction plugin.
(bloody capo! :imp: )

Thanks for the feedback

With a capo, I prefer to tune a little flat, apply the capo and tune up to the correct pitches.

It’s a PITA when I play live because the capo is used anywhere from fret 1 to fret 5 depending on the song. In fact we only do one song where it’s not used at all. Guitars are just not in the right key for me!

Your song mate, sing it as you like.

Do you test your intonation thru a tuner?
Sometimes you might have to tune to a specific chord
and cut and paste the offending strings/notes.
Capos can be nasty things too. What kind do you use?
Capo placement (pressure and string drag) are
big factors affecting intonation.

I have a clip-on tuner AND I often double-check with the Cubase plugin as well - though I do often find that hard to use - it seems to be TOO sensitive so the indicator bounces around too wildy making it hard to get a clear indiciation

Dunlop.

Indeed. I’m constantly adjusting the dam thing when we’re live. :imp:

I use a vintage Arion HU-8400 tuner, had it over 20 years. Very accurate, VU-style meter + 3 lights under it.
Still made, keep your eye out for one, recommended.

I gather the capo profile suits the fretboard curve of your guitar?

I’ve seen a few have been listed on a local auction site recently. I’ll keep an eye out for a new listing…

I gather the capo profile suits the fretboard curve of your guitar?

 eh? Didn’t know you could get different profiles? (Apart from those suited for the wider neck of a nylon guitar). I thought it was generally a kind of ‘one size fits all’ thing…

Yeah, Ian. I was refering to the studio enviroment. As Jet stated, fret height, string height and capo/ neck contour are the enemies. :sunglasses:

Yes Ian, there are capo contours and capo contours,
just as there are guitar neck contours. Maybe you could
pop on down to the biggest music store in town and see
if they will let you demo a range of products? Maybe you will
find a capo that has less impact on tuning. Maybe.

Try a different Dunlop, or a Shubb or a Kyser, or a G7.

However, the guitar’s intonation will affect everything
anyway, so unless it’s really well set up you will no
doubt experience capo problems. Sorry!

I always felt the guitar was a fundamentally flawed instrument

Can’t argue with you on that point!
