I went to print the violin part for a song I’ve transcribed for a friend and saw that the multi-bar rests were broken after every fermata. I’ve attached a picture of the score I’m working on for reference. I found a thread from 2019 on this topic and there was no resolution, only that this is how Dorico works. Does anyone know if the issue has been resolved or if there is a workaround?
Hi @jmstrebeck, and welcome to the Forum.
I don’t know how the fermatas are positioned in the full score. But there is a property to Attach the fermata to the barline, that mitigates the splitting a little bit because it doesn’t create a bar rest to put the fermata, if this would be a possible option for you, depending on context:
But generally I think the player would be happy to know where the fermatas are, instead of having a block of multi-bar rests without knowing what is going on. Also maybe you want to consider to add some cues for the players anyway, for the same reason (but probably you gave them the “cues” as text…which also can work). And that cues, and the text that you already have, will break even more the multi-bar rests, but will make the rehearsal time much shorter
Thank you for the reply. I wanted to combine as many rests as possible as there is only one line of music going to the next page, but your point about ease of reading makes a lot of sense. I think I may leave them and move some of the empty bars to previous systems to make room for everything on one page. Thank you!
In Engraving Options > Rests > Multi-bar Rests, there are settings for how much horizontal space a multi-bar rest takes up (ie how wide it is). With a bit of experimenting, you might be able to reclaim some space that way. The other approach is to reduce the vertical spacing between staves. That’s in Layout Options > Vertical Spacing.
In any case, with all the parts extraction we’ve all been doing in F-n-S over the years, if we really want that result we could make a copy of the project for just this purpose also this time!
