File management issues on Dorico for I-Pad

Dear Dorico community and team,

At least as far as I know, the iPad version of Dorico has a few limitations when it comes to file management.

I cannot create templates.

I also have no option within the program to save a file under a different name (for example, as a new or alternative version).

Likewise, there is no way within the program to save a file to a different location.

By chance, I discovered that Dorico creates a new file whenever I change the name.

In this way, I used one file as a starting template and simply changed the name, which resulted in a new file being created in the main Dorico folder.

Recently, however, Dorico has started generating new file versions in the main Dorico folder for all sorts of changes! - This makes it very difficult to work on files reliably…

I would strongly support adding a manual save function on the iPad as well (e.g., ā€œSave Asā€¦ā€).

From my perspective, it is neither necessary nor practical for a new file to be created every time the title of the piece is changed. As a composer, I actually find it useful when the file name does not have to match the title of the piece, since one often creates different versions of the same work—for example for different instrumentations—and may want to include additional information in the file name (e.g., v. 2026-03-…).

Personally, I would even prefer an option for a completely manual saving process, since on the iPad there are occasionally unintended changes when reading files, which one does not always notice.

From my perspective, it is unfortunate that the app works very reliably for most things, yet struggles with these simple aspects that are essential for using it dependably.

Any help, feedback is appreciated!!!

Greetings from Germany,

Johannes

I took a closer look at this.

Every time I open a Dorico file that is located in a subfolder, a new file is automatically created in the main Dorico folder.

To check whether this might be related to my template, I created a completely new file in the Dorico iPad version (just a simple piano score). Afterward, I moved this file into a subfolder. However, as soon as I open it in Dorico, a completely new file is again created in the main Dorico folder.

This means that it is no longer possible to work on files while maintaining my folder structure.

Can anyone confirm this behavior? I’m sure it was not like this before.

It cannot be intended that all files must necessarily be stored in the same folder…

Thanks for your help!

Johannes

I do save and save as with my iPad version all the time: it is the Share button (where you can Share/Save to another location and with another name). Use the Share as ā€œDorico Projectā€ option.

Thank you for that!!! - I didn’t realize that you could use the share function for that!

However, this is the smaller problem for me right now, because duplicating and renaming the file on the iPad also worked.

Can anyone confirm whether it’s possible to work on files that are not located in the main Dorico folder without a copy of the file being created in the Dorico folder?

I’m wondering if this is a general issue or if it’s just happening to me…

I also looked through the settings, but I couldn’t find anything related to this.

Thanks in advance!

Same issue. Change from previous version. Confusing, undocumented, except for this forum. Led to my deleting a lot of work trying to clean up the automatically created files.

From what I understand it should save back to the original file location. I’ve run into this issue as I move back and forth between my Mac and iPad Pro frequently. I’m doing some tests with a test build that Daniel invited me to see if it fixed it. Unfortunately it did not, and every single time I open from my regular folder, it duplicates it. I tried to recreate his steps (seemed to work for him)…but alas no luck for me.

Creating a subfolder in the Dorico main folder, moving a project into it and opening it, results in iterations placed in the Dorico main folder. And then depending on which one you open via ā€˜recents’ (additional created recent (now in in the Dorico main folder) has the same name as the subfolder project file), you’ll have iterated iterations. >>

>>On the main Dorico screen, looking at the files ā€˜on my ipad’ there is no standard simple way to see which file is which except by deciphering a greyed-out, right justified lloonngg OS level file path, no sortable headers.

What apparently happens is that a file created with the old Dorico version is reformed with the new version, and given the same name, while both files/projects still exist and show in recents. If the old file is opened, another iteration is named and saved on close. Opening the newly saved file of the same name (or 1st iteration if old version file was opened and closed from the main Dorico folder) doesn’t result in this ā€˜iterationing’.
