I cannot save files after the last update. I worked quite a few hours and noticed audio wasn’t working, so I saved the file and reopened. The notes I entered were not saved. I was unable to access the back up files as well. I tried again, and I got the same result. Files are not saving. Backups are not able to be opened. Can we uninstall updates? Win11 I just switched over to my Mac and files are not saving with Mac either. Is there a way to uninstall the update.
Hi @bophead , please do from the Dorico menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report and post here the corresponding zip file.
From what you describe it seems that the audio engine is crashing somehow and therefore Dorico can’t gather the project data any more.
The diagnostics contain hopefully dump files of the audio engine, which will help us greatly .
Also can you check in Preferences that your Backup files path is set correctly?
Hi,
Folders in preference look good. I have attached the Diagnostics report. Thank you for your help. I use Garritan Jazz Band and the program generally sends a crash report daily. I wonder if that is the issue.
I ran a “save as” in a different folder and it took.(win11) I am going to change the folders in the preferences and see if that helps.
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (566.6 KB)
Hi @bophead, thanks for the diagnostics, unfortunately they don’t contain any crash dump.
The next time you get that Send to Steinberg alert during start, simply click Don’t Send. Instead create a new diagnostic report and post here.
Thanks
OK, thanks. It looks like files made before the update that is not saving. It is really a bad bug. I just lost another days work. Backup is not saving as I go along. I have it set for 5 minutes.
Saving to local disk or a cloud?
Run diagnostics on the disk.
Running Insider Preview? I have found it can cause odd problems with Dorico.
Can oither programs save to the disk in question?
Several recent Windows 11 24H2 updates are causing bad issues with PC’s. All over the IT news. Worth investigating?
I’m merely a user and don’t understand the vast majority of what’s contained within the application logs, but is it possible that you’re attempting to work on backup projects in the backup projects folder?
edit: actually, even without going through the application logs, the recent file list shows that the first, second, third and fifth recently opened files are all housed in Backup Projects folders (some on the C drive and others on the G drive).
My suspicion is that you’ve opened a backup project in order to recover your work following a crash/hang, and haven’t then resaved the file in a sensible place (anywhere but the Backup Projects folder).
From some limited experimenting here (in Dorico 5.1.70, on a Mac), if I edit and save a project within my Backup Projects folder, Dorico does save the changes (as long as I tell it to), and it creates new backup files in a separate subfolder within Backup Projects. I’m not sure why you’re not seeing the same thing on either of your machines - perhaps you’ve been cycling between these various different backups without realising? - but your first step should be to save your work to a location outside of Backup Projects and ensure that future work is done to that version of the file.
I seem to remember that files that are opened from the Backup Projects folder don’t - or aren’t supposed to - show in the Recent Files in the Hub, though, so I wonder if perhaps that’s an additional thing that’s tripped you up: if you’re saving back to Backup Projects it’s quite difficult to then find the file you just saved, unless you’re going through Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac. Maybe someone from the development team could confirm whether that’s what’s going on?
Incidentally, the five minute thing you mentioned in your most recent post is irrelevant to Backup Projects: AutoSave happens every five minutes, and stores a single project that is deleted when the main project is closed in a stable way (manually closed with a save, manually closed without saving, manually closing Dorico). A Backup project is saved every time you manually save a project, but only then.
Win11 I did use search to find all instances of the file, and picked the oldest and sometimes the largest. Files saving preferences were all default. I do have another program that saves it to the cloud, but all files are saved initially on local HDs. I was stunned to lose 4 hours of work yesterday. I don’t understand why it will not save when I do a control S. I attached the screenshot of when I open a file started before the update. I guess I know now that when I see that, I should do a “save as” right away. I wouldn’t think that VSTs and audio would cause this type of issue. I have many error messages with that. Hope to move to a Mac soon. But yes, I searched for any file on any drive to recover, that is why you see cloud folders. Thank you for your help.
Honestly I don’t think the update has anything to do with anything. If you’re still seeing that error message, you’re opening a file that dates from before you updated, sure, but the likelihood is that that’s because Dorico’s intentionally not showing you Backup Projects in the Recent Files list in the Hub, which is a protection mechanism to dissuade you from editing Backup Projects .
If it is showing you Backup Projects, that’s probably because you’ve changed the folder path for Backup Projects.
I don’t think Dorico’s not saving your files; your application logs from a couple of days back confirms that it is saving your files. I think it’s just not showing you those files because they’re stored in the wrong place.
If you upload a new Dorico Diagnostics file I’m sure someone will be able to get to the bottom of what’s going on today.
On Win11 , I use everything. It shows everything and it looks to me as if backup files are those with the date time stamp in front of the file. It could well be a Win11 issue and not a Dorico issue. I moved my Project folder and backup folder to a local drive D: Default with Dorico is the Document folder, so I removed the Controlled Folder Access. I will check and see if that helps. I also get this error message.
That lead me to check folder permissions. Thanks again for helping me figure this out.
