Finale to Dorico: any benefits for non-finale users?

I was excited when I heard Finale was in some way merging with Dorico. After looking into it, I’m wondering if there are going to be any changes for non-Finale-users (in price, features, etc.) other than more users on Steinberg.

I wouldn’t call it a “merger”.

MakeMusic has simply said “We’re closing the shop: I recommend you go here instead.”

There’s no specific benefit for non-Finale users, except that more Dorico users paying in will hopefully drive more development.

Dorico in some ways has been a bit of an underdog in professional circles, with many people so locked into either Finale or Sibelius, at times practically sneering at Dorico.

To me, I personally see this as a moment where perhaps the Dorico user base will explode and the app will become more accepted within professional scoring & orchestration communities, as well as perhaps embraced by more and more teachers & students at the university level, ushering in a new era of users on a software that feels fresh and alive. For some of us that might mean more job opportunities, knowing the right software used in collaboration

But also, probably more development too!

“Solution”…??? Ha! I thank you for that kind endorsement, @hamsandwichnow.

Well, it kind of was

Commercial success should mean security for Dorico’s future.

An influx of users from Finale might mean a renewed focus on notation.

On the other hand, any compromise of Dorico’s standards to accommodate the new arrivals would be negative.

The migrants won’t be aware of the feature requests made over the years (not their fault) so there’ll probably be a lot of redundant posts in the forum.
