Finding out what playing technique I used

I began a piece a month ago, then had to set it aside. Now returning to it I don’t remember what I used for a playing technique.

The first two chords have a dot above them for a stopped or staccato sound. How do I find out what playing technique I used to put that dot there? I don’t see a “staccato” technique or something else with an appropriate name.

Once that is resolved, I want to verify what playback technique I connected the dot to. How might I check which playing techniques are linked to which playback techniques? I might as go all the way and ask to what in the expression map are the playing technique through the playback technique connected to?

A little disappointment: In the playing techniques handbells are grouped with harp (and others) under pitched percussion. There are a lot of harp techniques. I see I can’t delete the standard harp techniques so that I can more easily see the handbell techniques. When a harp technique is selected the trash can is grayed out.

Staccato is an articulation (press 2 above W), it will trigger a staccato playback technique, providing you’re using a library that has that sound…
Go to Play mode, check out what VSTi is set to play that instrument (handbells?) and whether it has an appropriate expression map set. You can check what that expression map is made of using the Library Menu>Expression maps…
There, look for staccato

When I selected the chord and pressed “2” the quarter note was changed to a 64th note. Ah, I see the dot in the left panel when in write mode.

My question isn’t about how to get the dot, it’s about what did I do to put the dot there when I wrote it a month ago. I doubt I did it by pressing 2 because I didn’t know to do that.

Either you selected the note and pressed the shortcut key (] on an English keyboard, but see this link for further info), or you selected the note and pressed the staccato dot in the left panel.

Or I created a playing technique I don’t remember or recognize?

Even if I used the dot in the left panel I do remember trying to connect it up to a playback technique and the expression map. Again, I don’t remember which one. I do remember that the dot didn’t seem to make any difference in playback, though that could be because GPO now has such room ambience in its sounds I can’t tell. So how might I tell what staccato is connected to?

If it is a Playing Technique, you should be able to select just the playing technique (in Engrave Mode) and press enter. That should bring up the “Edit playing technique” Window, and you will see which playing technique that is.

If it’s a playing technique, then you’ll be able to select it on its own (and Dorico will say “Playing technique” in the bottom status bar).

If it’s an articulation, then you won’t be able to select the dot without also selecting the note.

Thanks for the help. I’m now confident I did use the staccato articulation. I’ll have to spend some time looking for what I tried to do to mimic a staccato sound in the GPO that doesn’t have specific stopped handbell sounds.

Open the Key Editor…

You will see a playing techniques bar. Then, if you select a note you will see how Dorico has applied playing techniques to a specific note.
