Bit of an odd question here but something I’m seeing in some engravings I’m doing. Is it possible to make a “Fine” ending, kind of the reverse of a 1st/2nd ending. What was done here is the “1st” ending is actually what one should play on the DS… and the “2nd” ending is what one would play the “first time” through the piece. For example:
Dorico doesn’t support these kinds of notations in playback, but you should be able to recreate the appearance (though Dorico will prefer that all but the rightmost ending will show a closed right-hand end by default). In Engrave mode, if you select each segment of the ending line, you can override the text that appears in the bracket via the Properties panel in the lower zone.
Aha! I was looking in properties for some kind of override but didn’t think it would only show up in Engrave mode.
For future reference in case anyone was curious:
It is possible for Dorico to playback this kind of notation correctly:
The D.S.S. and Segno 2 signposts are hidden D.S. and Segno repeat markers with the Marker index property set to 2. Each ending bracket is a solid horizontal line with an inward-pointing hook.
That’s a fine ending
Wonderful!
This is not the first time I see an awesome tip from you. It took me a lot of time to decifer this one. I finally understood that there were no repeat endings at all, that the marker indexes indexed the segnos, etc… And there was one difference in my case, I did not want a Fine, but a D.S. (or D.C.) al Fine.
When I started to experiment, I had a lot of trouble with having 3 markers for 2 small bars, which kept jumping like sheep, until I realized that if I hid then while revealing their signposts they behaved. To some extent at least. I first tried to reproduce exactly what you had done,
and that worked only so far, because the D.S. al Fine is a Jump, while Fine is a Section, they do not behave the same, and of course the Jump occurred immediately. So, in Write mode, I used the alt-Left Arrow to move it to a more suitable place.
This changed nothing, which flabbergasted me, until I saw in the history a “Move Piano Toll Event”. My expectation was that moving a marker in Write mode would shift its attachment, and in Engrave mode would just shift its display area. But apparently the Write mode shift had been interpreted as a playback decision? This is really scary. Is that a behavior to be expected? Is there a way to protect against it?
Anyway, I started from scratch, created the DS al Fine right in its proper place, and this worked (after I checked the “Play Repeats After DS/DC”).
There is only a minor thing: the previous part of the piece which was an AABB with simple repeat bars was again fully replayed AABB and not AB, which is very often what is desired, and I thought I had seen it work that way. Is it a side effect of the previous Playback option? Is there another option to govern this? But it not at all an issue.
So thanks a lot, and happy new year :-)!
