Fingering Alignment When Using a Custom Font

Hello Dorico Users,

I’m currently engraving music for a series that uses Helvetica Bold for fingering annotations. However, I’ve noticed that in Dorico, the “1” character in stacked fingering doesn’t align properly with other numbers. I experimented with several monospaced fonts including Fragment Mono, SF Mono, Roboto Mono, and others, but I encountered the same issue.

I’ve also observed that there doesn’t seem to be an alignment option within Font Styles, which makes me wonder if that’s contributing to the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions or workaround tips for achieving consistent alignment for stacked fingering numbers?

Thanks in advance!

Not an answer, but I hope you’re going to change the repeat ending number font to match… :face_with_peeking_eye:

If you want a solution, you could make a modified version of the font that adds left side bearings to make it look aligned.

Thanks, Dan. I will try creating a custom font.

If you are open to other font choices, I use Finale Maestro numbers that are used also for time signatures, but at 50%. They look more like the standard fingering numbers one sees in good editions than other fonts. You would replace the Bravura with these in the Music Symbol editor under Fingering>Fingering 1 (thumb) etc. Don’t use the Plain. They stack fine, but I see that I did have to change the X and Y coordinates in the Music Symbol editor, probably by experimenting.

Good to know, John! I’ll take a look at Maestro.

It may depend (in part) on whether the numerals in the font are tabular (e.g. if they all have the same width and are centred on that width). Some fonts do this for standard numerals; others provide it as an OpenType feature.

In Dorico’s Paragraph Styles, you can set the OT feature, but not in a Font Style.

However, I would have expected mono-spaced fonts to be tabular, by nature, so if you’re not seeing this, then perhaps something else is going on.

I wonder if Fingering Text Font is center-justified. Font Styles don’t have a justification option. If I use a fingering paragraph with center justification, Helvetica stacks correctly. But to use the paragraph style would mean adding fingering as text.

From what I can tell, the system Helvetica Bold on MacOS does have tabular numerals by default, so even left-aligned numerals should stack correctly.

Unfortunately, that is not what I’m getting. Here is a link to my file, although I have put it aside today to work on other projects.
