Fingering that arises under/above the note line, which is then moved manually in the area of the note line, does not delete the background.
Only for the fingering with “Position left of notehead” the background is erased.

Right, that’s working as expected; only fingerings that will be drawn in the staff in their default positions will have erased backgrounds.

But, consistent and nicer would be to treat all fingerings in the staff uniformly.
The setting “Erase background behind fingerings inside the staff” is not unique.
