Fingering placement inside staff

Is it possible to allow fingering to be placed inside staff automatically? I know how to move it manually in Engrave mode, I’m looking for a global Engraver Setting.

As far as I know, there is no such setting. But would one really want a global setting for this so that all fingering is placed within the staff when possible? But perhaps that is not what you mean by a global setting.

Placing fingering under or over the note heads within the staff is a special case and probably best handled that way; that is, by moving it manually or by means of a new option to “Place within staff” that might be added to the Properties Panel next to “Position left of notehead” along with a new option for “Place right of notehead”.

Thanks, John. I disagree that placing fingering within the staff is a special case. I would rather classify it as a stylistic option, which in traditional plate engraving was standard. In my example, the first “1“ is an edge case; however, the second “4“ would look off outside the staff, way too far from the note head.

Hi SugarFree. I don’t think we are in major disagreement. I often place finger numbers within the staff as one sees in older engraving. By “special case” I meant that I don’t do it all the time; just when it improves comprehension. I agree with you that the 1 in the example is iffy. I might put it to the left of the notehead or omit it. In my opinion, the only numbers necessary are the 4 on the G, the 1 on the E natural, and the 4 on the C and the maybe the following 5. I would also omit the 1 on the following chord unless it is needed for what follows. But if this the composer’s fingering then, of course, all the numbers should appear.

As I mentioned, I support options to place the fingering on all sides of a note head and on and off the staff, just as one sees in fine editions of piano music.

I don’t know if there is a global setting, but doing the following will put the fingering underneath each note as you enter it. When entering the fingering in the fingering popover, put an L in front of the finger number - it can be uppercase or lowercase. The screenshot shows what I achieved with the following keystrokes:

select the first note, then
shift-F
L1
right arrow
L2
right arrow
L4
right arrow
L1
right arrow
L2

L4
right arrow
escape or enter or tab

You will probably want to re-position at least some of these fingerings, but there is less to do than if their initial position was above the notes.

To position left hand fingerings above notes, put an R in front of the finger numbers. Dorico’s default is to place right hand fingerings above the notes and left hand fingerings below the notes, ie outside the staves.

Yes, a default setting that Dorico always places the fingerings on the note head side would be really great. This makes reading the notes much easier, especially for beginners.

Another tip: Sometimes you just want to delete fingerings. To avoid having to switch to Engrave Mode or open the pop-up window every time you want to delete fingerings, I have set a key command for deleting fingerings (Reset Fingering), for example Alt + Backspace. Maybe that’s helpful!?

Kind regards
Sven

I agree that having an option to place fingering inside the staff would be helpful. I often find that placing it there is the best stylistic solution.

If you decide to do this manually, I suggest using the ‘Position left of notehead’ option, as it automatically clears the background. You can see the difference below: the left example uses ‘normal’ fingering, while the right one shows the cleared background.

Deletion of fingerings is quite simple, even without switching to Engrave Mode: Edit → Notations → Fingering → Reset Fingering.

You can easily create a shortcut for this in the Preferences, i.e. ⌥ + ⌫
