First beat of previous take plays when using punch in

When I try to record vocals with a punch in, the first half second or so of the previous take plays in my headphones.
To be clear, the issue is not the punch in location, because if I mute the previous take then the problem is solved.
I have also confirmed that “use pre-roll” is unchecked.
Right now I am working around this by doing shift M to mute the previous take, and shift U if I need to restore it.
But it would be nice if I could streamline my workflow by getting rid of these steps, and this behaviour doesn’t seem to make sense.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this issue?

Could you post a screenshot showing the Track’s Lanes expanded so we can see the various takes. Also include a Ruler in the pic so we can refer to specific points along the timeline.

Where along the timeline do you hear what you expect, and where do you hear stuff you don’t expect?

Attached is the screenshot of a situation where I experience this issue, with lanes expanded.

I hear what I expect everywhere except right at the beginning of the punch in region. Specifically I hear the first “hump” in the waveform of bar 13 in my headphones. My understanding is that this should not be audible, as it is after the punch in point.

My issue with this is that my goal with doing these punch ins is typically that I have sung a note wrong, and want to re-do it. But when I hear the wrong note playing in my headphones, it causes my voice to instinctively follow it.

That’s pretty odd looking. You clearly have 2 different Audio recordings on the Track. But then only one Lane has any Audio on it. Normally I’d expect to see the different Audio each on a Lane of its own. They don’t seem to be stacked on each other on the same Lane - you’d see the checker marking that indicates overlap. I’m guessing the other Audio is on a Lane further down the list.

Can you post a similar screenshot but make sure to show all the Lanes for the Track - you can close the Lower Zone (and right too) to make more room. Also show the entire length of the recordings.

Here is the whole recording, as you guessed, the other audio was on a lane that was out of view.

My guess would be you’re hearing the end of bar 12 from ‘Vocal 04’. (And possibly the tail of any effect it is sending to - possibly Room works.) In which case, try moving your punch-in locator a beat earlier and see what happens.

I wonder why you’re punching in at all given that this appears to be the beginning of the track. You could just do another take without punching in.

Agree. You could also just grab the lower left corner of Vocals 04 and drag it right so it starts on bar 13

Or

In which case you wouldn’t hear any earlier Takes.

Thank you both for your replies, however the explanation of hearing bar 12 is definitely not the reason. As you can see in my first screenshot, there is no audio in bar 12 of Vocal 04. And as previously stated, the issue is solved if I mute the Vocal 07 track.

As for the comment that I could record a take without punching in, this is true in the current situation. But this was just an example to illustrate the problem. I need a solution for when I want to punch in at a precise time.

One other thing I considered was whether there was a pre-verb in the signal chain. However, I bypased all inserts and sends, and the problem still occurred. Just for good measure, I also added a new track with no inserts or effects, and the problem still occurred.

Maybe a hidden Track?

Is this specific to this one Project?

There are no hidden tracks. Also the problem is solved if I mute Vocal 07, so this is definitely what I am hearing.

This happens on all of my projects.

FWIW I’ve had a similar issue.
It’s a very short blip of audio but definitely happens.

Sorry to hear you also experienced this, did you manage to find a solution?

Sadly no, it’s annoying rather than a process complete killer. The first few times it threw me off for sure. I don’t do a lot of punch-in recording, if I did more it I can see would be really annoying.

Hi,

Reported to Steinberg. Thank you.
