First few days impression with 16 inch M1 Max Pro and Cubase 11 pro - wow

Hi not sure why you’d have five gulfosses on one channel, but I did the test,

Are you ready?

I don’t think you are…

50 tracks ie 250 gulfosses. No dropouts

It chokes on the 51st. I’m sure I could tweak settings for more possibly.

This literally renders my Mac Pro 16 core as officially ancient.

results in above comment. Pretty astounding.

exactly. You’re literally going to wet your pants - excuse my expression - when your 14 inch arrives

I mean intel are probably about 2 - 3 years behind in their tech now.

I can see / and am hearing a lot of chatter from PC users who are mulling over, or have already made the jump to the new Mac M1s. Will be interesting to see if this starts a wave of migrations from cubase pc users to Cubase Mac. I have a feeling it may well do. The difference between the two chips / computers is phenomenal

Microsoft has been using Windows on Arm for about 10 years. Im sure we will see others do Arm based machines that can compete with Apple. I would not be surprised if AMD will make it. Qualcomm is already in to that. Google and Amazon has their own Arm based CPU’s but they are server focused. (Goggle has a chip for phones/tablets as well). They mostly run Linux, but there is nothing stopping Microsoft to use Arm.

Hello, I also have M1 Max Pro but somehow I did not like it I bought it for work before I had a computer now I bought this M1 Max Pro but I think I will switch to a computer with windows again because it is the best for me maybe someone likes MAC but unfortunately not me

We all like different things. Never heard of someone not liking the new M1 max though, but fair enough.

Sure. The main dividing factor at present is the power consumption that AS has achieved. If amd et al can match that then the competition will certainly hot up.

Yes, having just run the test on my 5900X your results do seem lower than I’d expect.
I can run 59 tracks with 5 Gullfoss no problems, Occasional drop-outs when I add one more. Unusable by the timer I get to 67 tracks and complete standstill when I load the 69th. It’s bizarre that our total numbers of tracks before complete drop out are similar but the usable ones are so different.

WIndows 10, 20H2
AMD Ryzen 5900X
64Mb RAM
RME Digiface (128 samples)
Processing precision 32bit float

I know the RME drivers have a good reputation but good enough to make such a difference? Surely not?
Must run the test on my old Intel machine to see how poorly that did (it’s very old).

I suppose it’s each to their own. I used to have a Mac ages ago, but paying £75 for a replacement keyboard and seeing the prices of their new machines made me switch to a PC.

Having worked on both, my experience has been that they both crash, they can both be slow, and they both die. But PCs are more customizable. A friend had a great Mac, the logic board died, he had to buy a new one. The exclusivity puts me off TBH.

When I switched to a PC it wasn’t an easy ride, but they have finally caught up, just purchased a new PC, and have never been happier.

Apple care is 300 bucks and gives you peace of mind for 2-3 years. Many IT specialists find that the general life of a Mac is longer than a PC and tends to be more cost effective in the long run, despite PCs being cheaper in the short term. People just take the short term view that a Pc is cheaper than a Mac on initial costs rather than taking the longer term view.

holy crap! thats super fast!

i had my eye on the 5950X, i understand this CPU is upgradable with the AM4 socket

hahaha wtf!! Big thanks man for doing this…it means that the core handling is very good.

this is important since plugins become heavier and heavier every year, like VPS Avenger which can be a monster.

and it shows how good the m1 Max is compared to the 2019/20 i9 macbook pro, in case somebody wants to buy it second hand (dont do it, save up and get the M1 Max id say)

its very hard to go into a mac store, install cubase and do this test in the shop…its all Logic thats on show

thanks again for your effort!

Fair enough,

Although, I had my older PC for 10 years and in its lifetime I changed the motherboard, which was defective from the start (covered by the warranty) and I only had to replace a few drives at a very low cost.

just a quick look at Apple, and I realized that the new PC I bought if I was to buy a Mac with the same specs in terms of the CPU and RAM capacity, it would cost me £6,459 (that Mac is refurbished as well). I paid about one-third of the price for my brand new PC, my pocket just can’t go that deep.

Kudos to those who can, but I had to opt-out of Macs a long time ago.

With that said, I will keep an eye out for any people I know with the new Mac, would love to see first hand what it can do.

No worries, you really feel the difference in power and stability when running cubase. Everything is so smooth like butter even at super high loads without any fan noise. It’s such a pleasureful experience.

That’s understandable. Refurbished store will have the new macs within around 6-8 months. Maybe a bit longer. They’re usually 15 to 20 per ent off sometimes more. Also within a year people will be selling their macs for the new ones so you’ll get at least 40 per cent off. Just make sure you go with someone who has a lot of selling history. Of course if you’re happy with the pc route then why change. Just use what works for you.

I’m in the same boat - MacBook Air with an M1 chip. It’s been a dream to use. I don’t run big projects, only about 20 audio tracks and 5 to 8 VST instruments - but it’s running brilliantly (even having taken a chance with Monterey).
Only one VST doesn’t work (by LABs) but that may just need to be reinstalled.

@luke7020 Did you get a 32GB or 64GB ram model? I currently have a 64GB AMD machine and wondering if the 32GB will be enough for me.

OP: I would love it if you would run the following test and let me know how the performance compares on the M1. If the lag isn’t there I will switch!:

I got the 64. Depending on your project load the 32 would probably suffice. I got the 64 as I do a lot of film graphics work too. But I also like knowing I can have various simultaneous apps open and not have to worry too much. Though too many and it affects battery life so it’s all a balance and trade off.

Having said that when I check my memory usage, some of my cubase projects are already into the 40-50 GB ram range.
