Fit More Chord Symbols In A Bar?

Hi, how can I fit more chord symbols in a bar of 6/8? So far, I have tried:

  • Increasing the rhythmic grid
  • Adding notes for the chords to “attach to”

I want the chords to go above the second and the fourth dotted 8th note in the bar with the F and Bb.

With the rhythmic grid set to the dotted eighth, using will move to the next note in chord-input mode.

When I select a note and ⇧Q the chord symbol goes right on that beat.
Is that not working for you?

My understanding is he also wants chord symbols on the “half-beats,” so four per 6/8 measure.

Yeah – I entered some dotted eighths in 6/8, selected the 2nd one, no problem. I even tried moving a note leftwards by a 32nd, and the chord symbol still goes right on it.

But can you use the space bar to advance through all four while entering new symbols? I could not.

No, but like you said you can set the grid and use right-arrow. I was just going by the screenshot and saw where he wanted to add chords on the offbeats.

I think at this point we’ll need some clarification on want you’re after, @coltrane36251.

Am I getting this — first wrong, with the space bar:

Then right, with the arrow:

Apologies to both you and @Mark_Johnson if my end-of-the-day brain is simply missing something obvious.

Maybe it was the word “you” in post #3 that was confusing. I was addressing the O.P.

We’ve now replied 8 times to this little query, so I am going to stop.

Ah, yes — an embarrassment of “riches.” I will also back away. Hope we helped, @coltrane36251.

Thanks so much for the replies, everyone. I have tried arrows, I have tried clicking directly on the note and shift Q. Will try changing to a dotted 8th.

When I enter the chord and progress to the next note, The software completely ignores what I inputted. Except for the 6/8 down beats

And you’re doing it just like in my second video, with the rhythmic grid set to dotted eighths?

It looks like it may have been my old Finale habit of entering “/A” instead of “F/A”. I knew that Dorico was going to shorten it to that. When I entered the full chord and bass note combination, it allowed it. I think my confusion came due to the fact that Dorico didn’t register an invalid error, but just moved onto the next chord and left the one I entered blank. Now that I know this is the behavior, I will look for this.

Thanks for your help!

By the way, what is this great software with the keystrokes?

I believe it’s Keycastr, but can’t remember with certainty and I’m not at my machine (a Mac, BTW) that has it installed. Definitely free, and with just a little effort I set it for colors that I thought “popped.”
