Flash card page layout

I’m hoping to replicate a book a created a long time ago using now-extinct software. This is a page with rhythms inside boxes like little flash cards.

I suppose it isn’t actually necessary to exactly replicate the boxes. My first guess is that I would somehow place a blue music box directly on top of a graphics box but there may be a more elegant solution.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could do as you describe with music frames on top of graphics frames in Dorico, but I think this layout would be much easier with InDesign or Affinity.

A better option than mine, still wanted to try without, not matching the design. Better to export SVGs of the music and finish in Affinity.

With Cutaways:

I downloaded your dorico file to study it. Really interesting, thank you. How did you draw the boxes?

Affinity would be totally new to me looks like it’s free so maybe worth learning for this project.

Also, when I looked at the snare drum part by itself, I see measures rest and so on. How did you make those elements disappear in the score?

Turn on signposts, and you’ll see. I used right-click->Staff->Create manual cutaway.

Here’s what @James_DeCaro suggested. (sloppily made in a hurry)

With five flows in separate music and text frames: You could use graphic frames and import some fancy outline. I used text frames since they can have a border.

They are double lines with terminal lines start and end caps.
