Is there a way to flip dynamics in a cue to above the staff without them switching in the original part? For example, I’ve got a tenor sax part that has a sustain, but I want to cue a horn solo in those same bars. The cues themselves look great, in an up-stem voice above the written low sustain. However, the dynamics in the cue are below the staff, mixed in with the dynamics for the tenor sax’s written part. I’d like to flip them to above the staff so it’s clear what dynamics are for the cue and what is for the tenor part, but when I do that, they flip to above the staff in the original horn part as well. Is there a way to “unlink” them or something so that I can adjust them just for the cues, but not affect the positioning on the horn staff?
I should add that I have a workaround, which is to exclude dynamics from that cue and add them in directly to the tenor sax part, at which point I can scale, position, and suppress playback of them. That works fine for me, but I’m wondering if there’s a more straight-forward solution.
Hi @jawmusic I found that flipping the position of cue dynamics in engrave mode, doesn’t influence the original:
Maybe you have to set the local properties as Locally?
Was just getting ready to post that. If Globally is selected it will flip in the source too. You need Locally selected to only flip it in the cue. (I don’t generally include dynamics anyway, as they typically aren’t very important to an entrance cue. Obviously they are important if the cue is an optional part that may be played.)
But if it is the latter, consider just writing it into the part in a separate voice and making it cue-size.
If you edit the cues properties in full score with the Layout Option/Players/Cues/Show Cues activated, you are in the same layout, so the changes are being applied to what you see. I suggest to make your engraving in the part layout and in the score layout separately. And check that you are in Locally in both. The Show Cues option for the full score,is only for checking, and I suggest to deactivate it for the full score. (Also remember : if the text of the property is Bold White you have some Globally change happening for that property.)
The locally/globally thing isn’t the issue. I know how to make the change in one part without affecting the other. I want the cues to print in the score. That’s pretty standard for band lit. Looks like the workaround may be the only way to make that happen?
Sorry, i thought that you in your OP you was referring to parts. My mistake.
If you need the cues in Full score with dynamics and custom positioning etc., than yes, I think manual intervention and your workaround is the best solution.
Then you should enable cues in the score (Layout Options>Players>Cues>Show Cues)
I did. That’s not the issue.
These are “playing cues” rather than “orienting cues”. Dorico’s cue feature isn’t as well suited to this use case. Just write them in the score and then you can format them however you want.
I think the feature is fine, it’s just not designed for situations where they overlap a written part (understandably…that’s pretty unusual). And if I wasn’t concerned with having the dynamics visible, it would be fine. So I’m fine with my workaround, just wanted to see if anyone knew of a better way. Appreciate all the comments everyone!
