Flow Page Number position on New Flows

I have Dorico set up to use flow page numbers, so the numbers reset with each flow. However, depending on which page a new flow is starting on (relative to the entire project), the page number position can be located on the left or the right, depending on if Dorico thinks the page is a Left or Right page. I’m working on a project where each flow will be considered separately, and the “First Page” is expected to be a Right Page. How would I tell Dorico that each first page of a flow is starting on the Right Page, even if that means having a blank Left Page to get this to happen? I suppose I could create 1 page dummy flows in between them to push it over, but this is obviously a workaround.

Don’t create dummy flows, that’s unnecessary clutter. Instead, create a blank page template, and apply a page template change where you need a blank page. After a blank page, you’ll need to specify another template change back to the First Page template.

If flows are configured to start on a First page template, specifying a blank page template as “current page only” should not require resetting the first page of the next flow manually to First AFAIK.

You can insert Blank pages without a template, using “Insert Pages”, though there might be benefits to making a Blank template and applying that.

For instance, you could create a page template called “Blank” or similar, with a text frame and the words “This page intentionally blank.”

This (designing a page insert with a created “blank page template”) seems likely to be the most intended workflow to me. I’m guessing this could be a blank page at the end of the previous flow, or at the beginning of the following one.

Either way, as far as my client is concerned, these are effectively separate documents that I’m just organizing for my own benefit into a single project (it’s all the same ensemble, allows for any engraving, playback, or layout changes to propagate across all scores simultaneously), so from their perspective, a blank page provided to them would make zero sense.

Seeing as there doesn’t seem to be any way to actually specify to Dorico that each flow should be counted as beginning on a left or a right page (for example, I personally prefer starting on the left page so you automatically eliminate a possible page turn, but this client appears to be operating with the first page of every score as being on the right, like the beginning of a book), the dummy flow that I don’t print and thus is completely invisible to my client is probably the answer at this point with Dorico’s current functionality.

Perhaps you could create a separate Layout for each flow. That would keep everything in the same document for your benefit, but provide separate PDFs or printed pages, each starting on a right-hand page.

How would that work? I’m not aware of being able to specify individual flows per layout. I should poke around the Setup page.

Setup shows you how three different things are wired up: players (left), flows (bottom), and layouts (right).

To control which flows are used in a layout, you can select the layout on the right (turns bright blue), and then untick the checkboxes for the flows you don’t want.

If you needed instrumental parts for each one, then things would spiral out of control a bit.
