Flow-template?

when the subtitle changes on the first page of the second flow, do you usually create a separate template and apply it to that first page of the second flow? Or do you just create a text box without a new template and enter the subtitle manually?

What exactly do you mean here with the word “subtitle”?

Is this a new flow and you are talking about a flow header? You can create multiple flow header templates and apply flow header changes wherever you need - if this is, what you mean, but I’m only guessing here…

Yes, it’s a new flow with a new flow header. When starting a new section, do you usually create a new template for it?

No you don’t.

With new section, you probably mean new flow. The appearance of the Flow headers is controlled by the Layout Options/Page Setup/Flows/Show Flow headers.

The individual names of the Flow headers are controlled by your input into the Project Information Window.

There are many tokens for the Flow informations.

So with one single Flow Heading Template, you can display plenty of flow-specific informations.

Do you typically display tokens in a text box? I worked with tokens in a text box, but when editing the beginning part, the text box sometimes moves to another location.

In a text frame, but always in a template (Page Template or, like here, Flow Heading Template). Then it won’t move except if you make changes in the template itself (or if you make them directly in the page, in which case you create an override).

If I use a text box on a page instead of a template, can it move depending on edits?

Is it better to set up a new template for the second flow rather than directly entering text into a text box on a regular page?

It depends on what you call a text box.

If you insert a text frame directly on a page (in Engrave Mode), it will be anchored to that specific page and position (top, bottom, left, right), regardless of any future changes. And it will create a page override. So it’s not recommended — unless you’ve completely finished your layout and you’re sure you won’t be changing anything else.

If you want it to stay attached to a musical position and move along with the music, then create a Staff-attached text with Shift+X instead.

Please provide a screenshot of what you’re trying to achieve, I think it will be easier!

Is it better to set up the second template and third template on pages 3 and 4 respectively, or to place text boxes directly on the pages and represent them as tokens?

Use the templates as much as you can, it will be easier for your workflow!

But take care: when you create a template from a blank page, when you add a music frame, it’s by default (I think) unlinked to the other frames. You’ll need to restore the “MA” chain before applying the templates, otherwise odd things will happen

I’m not 100% sure what you aiming at, but …

If you set this in layout options

Page 3 and 4 look like this

Is it better to use a new template when the flow changes?

Not needed if you only want to change some of the values in Project Info between flows

When expressing the second and third movements, is it better to insert a text box instead of a new template on the page?

Sorry, at this point apperently I don’t understand what endgoal you want to reach.

Did you try this?

If that’s not wat you want, could you describe, maybe with a drawing or some other example what you want?

Is the Text frame better like orange?

Sorry, maybe it’s my limited knowledge of Dorico myself, but I really don’t understand what kind of info you would like to show there, and when (and why).

But, most of the time Page Overrides are not the best solution.

Hopefully others can help you further.

Thanks. @k_b @Estigy @charles_piano @TonH

  • Use the “First” template only for the first page. It includes the big title of the whole piece, and you don’t want that on the other pages
  • From the second page on, whenever a new Flow starts, Dorico will automatically insert the flow header. You don’t need to add any text boxes manually for this.
  • If you don’t like the look of these flow headers, edit the Flow Heading Template, as @charles_piano already showed.

But just as I said, all this is done automatically in the first place. Maybe it’s best to roll back all your overrides and see what Dorico will come up with on as a first step now.
