I am an old Finale user and have been using Dorico for about a year. I added a flugelhorn part to my score, but it sound like a piano. How do I change the sound to something like a flugelhorn (could be a french horn if there is now flugelhorn sound).
Please help.
Hi @Andrew_Classen, and welcome to the Forum.
To correct automatically the assignation of sounds and so the playback, quite often it is enough to reapply the Playback Template: from menu Play > Playback Template, select your desired playback template (the âAutoâ one will do, as it contains all the factory sounds), and click Apply and Close.
Edit: I tested , and the Flugelhorn instrument, with the Auto Playback Template, loads the Trumpet Combi (from Halion Symphony Orchestra)âŚ:
âŚwhile with the Note Performer playback templates (if you happen to have it), loads a Flugelhorn:
(You could of course load manually an Iconica Sketch Horn in the Flugelhorn channel.
If you want to make this change attached to a playback template that you can reuse in future projects, you could edit a duplicate of the Auto Playback Template, adding a custom Endpoint Configuration that tells Dorico to load the Iconica Sketch horn when a flugelhorn instrument is present⌠Not sure about the range, thought. Tell me if you would need directions to do this.)

Ok, my understanding of Doricoâs playback engine is zero. I can get to this screen. I selected the top one and itâs still a piano sound. How do you get to the screen you are showing? Can I get the playback engines you are talking about?
Ok, letâs take it step by step. Solo Flugelhorn, does that come from Finale? I mean, is this a xml import? If so, go to setup mode and make sure you change the instrument to flugelhorn in Dorico. Why? Because Dorico does not know what âSolo Flugelhornâ is, and is probably giving you a piano sound as a fallback sound. But if you set it to Flugelhorn through the instrument picker, chances are the playback template is going to get in action and youâll get the sound youâre wanting!

No, this was out of a Dorico template. I just renamed it because I have 2 section flugelhorns. They all sound piano
Hi @Andrew_Classen,
I see that you are probably using Dorico 5, since I donât see the Auto Playback template.
No worries:
for the Flugelhorn to sound like a brass, you need to choose a Playback template that has HSO in its name (HSO=Halion Symphonic Orchestra).
To cover also the other instruments you have in your setup, I suggest to load one of the following Playback Templates (To load/apply a Playback template, select it and click on Apply and Close).:
Iconica Sketch, HSO, HALion Sonic Sel., Marching Perc., Olympus
or
Iconica Sketch, HSO, HALion Sonic Sel., Olympus, GASE
(the one with Marching Perc. will give you marching percussion instruments, while the one with GASE will load Groove Agent SE if you need drum kits for example)
This will load the patch Trumpet Combi for the Flugelhorn channel (an explicit Flugelhorn patch is not available in the factory sound libraries FWIK), but at least you have something similar, instead of a piano.
Once you have loaded one of the mentioned Playback templates, you can invoke the plugin assigned to a channel clicking on the E icon (edit instrument), in the Track Inspector of your Flugelhorn (follow the numbers in my screenshot here below).
You will see the Halion Sonic Window, with he loaded Trumpet Combi that will have the same channel as your track, and in the Track inspector you will see that Dorico loaded the correct Expression Map [green rectangles and arrows]

Thanks for your help. I ended up buying Note Performer. It works great and has a good flugel sound.
