In all other parts i.e. clarinet, trumpet, etc. the Chorale is on the same page. I can’t figure out why only the flute part put the Chorale on a separate page. The Chorale is Flow 2. How can I get the Chorale on the same page as the Chords and Balance page ( at the bottom)?
Hi and welcome to the forum!
I see that those are two different flows. Are you sure you’ve set the right option in Layout options (cmd+shift+L)>Page setup>Flows so that different flows are allowed on the same page?
Are you positive there is no frame break if that setting is ok?
If all this is not enough to solve the problem, put a frame break at the very start of the work, and check its properties in Engrave mode (make sure you show the signposts so that you can select it to check its properties). Ticking “wait for next frame break” property will force Dorico to put everything on the first page (or frame, here), until you set a new frame break somewhere later in the music.
Thanks so much! Putting a frame break at the beginning of the work and deleting the one at the beginning of the second flow did it! Thanks for the quick response! As you probably guessed I’m new to Dorico. Coming from Finale and most recently Musescore 4 (which is quite good!)
(You likely don’t even need the first Frame break)
My second question was about frame breaks being there (but not shown in your capture). Since there was a frame break at the beginning of the second flow, Dorico just did what it did. Because not doing it would be crazy.
Deleting all breaks was my second advice (and Janus’ one)
Of course, adding a break at the start and changing its property will always work, but it can cause a whole lot of trouble if you’ve forgotten about it!
Always show the signposts. And voice colours ![]()
Will do. I didn’t know that I had a frame break at the start of flow 2. I used system breaks to organize the score into # of measures on each page. Was it incorrect to do it that way?
If you always want four bars per system, as you have in your first flow, you can do that with Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Casting Off > Fixed number of bars per system.
But this setting applies to the whole layout, and it looks like you want something different in the second flow. So I think your only option is to do it by hand, with system breaks.
It might be nice if we could change casting off settings at breaks, just like we can change the space size.
Thank you. I’m loving working in Dorico, but the learning curve is frustrating at times. I’m coming from Finale and Musescore 4.
I agree. Nice idea!
@bdrumsanchez You could reach a similar result as setting a global casting off, but in a local way, using a Note Spacing Change (at the beginning of a flow for example) with a bigger or smaller value than the default one, so the music will be reorganised, until you reach more or less the desired casting off, then refine it using system breaks. (If you need the change only until a certain point you can set a Reset NSP)
