FM Lab FM E-Piano layering issue

Really liking the sounds in FM Lab but I’m noticing sound issues specifically when layering FM Lab program FM E-Piano with other non FM lab sounds such as the acoustic pianos. The FM E-Piano starts out sounding like a nice typical DX7 tine electric piano sound when played by itself but once another non FM lab sound is layered with it The FM E-Piano starts to sound like the operator settings or something like that and the sounds starts to sound like some sorta FM distortion is happening. And yes I checked the volume levels to make sure neither patch was set too high. Is this normal ? Thanks!

Can you give a specific example please?

Yes. Load the program from FM Lab FM E-Piano and this program sounds fine played on it’s own. Layer it with a non FM Lab program like the Yamaha S-90 ES piano and then that’s when the FM E-Piano starts randomly distorting. No issues with the CPU and the volume levels are not pegging the meters. I did uninstall and reinstall FM Lab but that didn’t make any difference. I’m using a MacMini M2

Just tried your experiment and both sounds sound perfect together and individually. No distortion whatsoever on my Windows 11 Pro machine!

I’ve just noticed exactly the same issue with Halion 7.1 and Halion Sonic 7.1 on macOS Sonoma.

I’m on Mac OS Ventura. Is your Mac Intel or Silicon?

Apple Silicon, specifically MacBook Pro with M2 Max .

I wonder if the issue is specific to Halion 7.1 or it also occurs in 7.0?

I just got Halion 7 so I’ve only had 7.1. Sounds like it’s a bug

@Gerrit_Junge Can you reproduce this issue or are we doing something wrong here?

I just emailed Steinberg support about this issue. Hopefully they will respond to it soon

Hi ikos,
yes, I’m able to reproduce it here. Its now in our Defect-Tracking-System and listed as Bug-ID “HALLY-10822”.
I hope we can provide a fix for it soon.

Definitely a Mac issue as this issue when I use FM Lab on my Windows laptop doesn’t occur. Hopefully a fix for the Mac version is available soon.

Another bump. Any progress?

I don’t think we will hear anything before the next maintenance release.

In the mean time, we can use two instances of HALion in a DAW and layer it that way. Not ideal, but it should work.
