So frankly I can say i know too much about Halion . more than I gathered today.
I bought 2 FM synths , the Arturia DX7V , and NI FM8.
What Im after is NOT how many presets a thing got (its nice if all other stuff works though).
So in both these 2 VSTs i basicly just did they init tone and wanted to try out how they perfom on the typical FM sweep . 1 or perhaps 2 operators feeding into the 1st with a attack or a decay . then adjusting the other 2s output levels feeding into the feeding into the 1st. wanting that super-metallic angel grinder sound .DX7V when going into the higher harmonics ( i e the output on whatever osc feeds into the 1st is too great ) just looses its entire tone and colapses into a non tonal noise . FM 8 while it does not go into a nontonal noise abruptly is not pulling through all the way.
Doing this on the reface dx is more or less a no brainer .
So i saw this video on FM lab . thought i give it a go . not for the preset but to evalute its engine on this problem alot of software fm synth seems to have regarding this issue.
So I understand that FM Lab obviously is not a standanlone app & vst as i first thought.
So grabbed halion . then used the steinberg downloader and it fetched the FM lab.
Tried opening it but i got nothing. Kinda expected halion to let me trial FM Lab for 10-20 minutes or so (no patch saving) .
But im not so sure I wanna buy the thing if I cant test out how the synthengine handles the sound.
Perhaps im missing something and it can be trialed?
Why would I spend €500+ on HALion just to maybe find out if FM Lab’s engine handles FM sweeps properly?
