Font Question (Minion)

Was looking for some insight from people with more direct experience. Now that I’m completely switched over to Dorico, and I have a couple weeks off in my schedule, I thought it would be a good time to make changes to my standard layout.

I really like Libre Bodoni for Titles.

I’m looking to purchase Minion Pro for some score elements. I’d like to not buy too many and was wondering …

For smaller score elements like “rit.”, “SNARE DRUM”, would you suggest the REGULAR or CAPTION style of the font?

What about for tempos (Maestoso, etc) would you go for BOLD or SEMIBOLD?

Any insight would be very helpful.

Thanks!

I use Minion Pro for almost everything. For small text, I recommend Medium weight.

Tempos should be bold, IMO. Tradition.

Honestly though, I would recommend free alternatives, like Crimson Pro. It’s a Google font and quite lovely. I’ve started using it on some projects.

The Caption style is designed for text at small point sizes, 9 pt or smaller. It is very good for Lyrics, making them legible while small.

Crimson is a surprisingly good font. Came out of the Linux world some years ago now.
