If I have a rhythm example in 6/8 and want to show a dotted half rest, Dorico defaults to a measure rest symbol. While I accept that as the norm, for this specific instance, I’d like to use a dotted half.
I’ve tried entering a dotted half rest with force duration turned on but Dorico automatically makes this a measure rest symbol.
AFAIK the only rest that will display centered in the bar is the default whole rest. Any other rest will display at the rhythmic position where it starts – in this case, beat 1.
Here’s one way to get closer: Start Note Entry, and move to the second eighth note in the bar. Then start a 6:5e tuplet.
Select the eighth rest and set its opacity/alpha channel to 0 in the Color property, then hide the tuplet number.
You should be able to enter a dotted half rest with Force Duration on. It works for me. I entered the half note rest first, then selected it and pressed [dot].
Hmm, you’re right. Didn’t work for me the first time I tried it, but it does now – not sure what I was doing differently. I can even enter the dotted half rest directly, rather than changing an existing half rest.
