Force Make Into Frame?

Hi all,

It seems “Make Into Frame” is refusing to fit one system into a page which I believe could clearly fit all eight systems since there is plenty of space in between each system. I feel this is something preliminary but I haven’t found anything on the topic in the forums…

As you can see, I highlight the first and last element that I want in the frame as usual, but Dorico simply creates a frame break at the beginning and casts off the last system no matter what I do.

Thank you as always for your help!

Are these two separate flows?

Can you change vertical space between systems in Engrave options? This can make magic in some cases.

They are indeed two separate flows.

I’ve tried to manually get the systems closer together in order to leave plenty of space on the bottom for the last system and tried to “Make Into Frame” again, but that last system stays on page 2 regardless. Thanks for the suggestion though!

AFAIK you can’t force separate flows into one frame / onto one page. Maybe I’m wrong.

I don’t want to contradict you, but I mainly write collections of very short pieces for students (such as this exercise) and can sometimes fit three different (albeit very short) flows into a single page. I’m just wondering why even by creating extra space manually, Dorico refuses to include this eighth system.

Thank you very much for weighing in, perhaps there is something I’m overlooking…

My suggestion is to reduce the gap between systems gradually in Layout Options.

You can change the gap between the last system of flow 1 and the flow heading of flow 2, either through the Change flow heading tool (Engrave mode, right panel, right-click to add a flow heading change) or through Layout options>Page setup>Flows

Update: It seems that changing the gaps between systems did indeed work, but only once I closed the project. Upon opening in again to try Vadian and Marc’s suggestions, the eight systems had refreshed and are now on the first page. Strange, since I’d given up and closed the project for the time being with the eighth system still stuck on the second page…

Thank you for your help! Again, it seems adjusting the gaps is indeed the solution, I just don’t know why it didn’t work when I initially tried that the first time around before I posted this topic…

Thanks to all you your kind help!

Alex, you can go to Engrave Mode, select the very first Frame Break signpost and (down in the Property Panel) turn on “Wait for next Frame Break”. That should do it.

I have a similar problem:

Dorico refuses to make a single frame of either pp. 3-4 or pp. 4-5. According to the percentages, either page would be only slightly more than 100% full, which shouldn’t pose a problem. I tried fooling around with the “Wait for next Frame Break” property (which, btw, only appears when you choose local rather than global as the scope), but it has no effect. I suppose I could manually move each system until I got the desired result, but that’s generally deprecated as a way of making large adjustments like this. Elsewhere in the file I can make single frames as expected. And before anyone mentions it, Layout Options are set to permit starting a new flow on any page. I also tried not showing flow headings, but that didn’t help either.

If I understand the issue correctly you want to start new flows anywhere.

To do that allow new flows to start on an existing page in Layout Options > Page Setup > Flows

In spite of my 2nd last sentence, you were right, for some reason that one layout was not set to permit new flows on any page. Since I’m not the OP on this, I can’t mark it as solved, but it is, so thanks.
