Dorico iPad 2.1, Free Registered Version
iPad Pro 2018 and Apple Pencil
I have an arrangement in 2/4 time signature. In the Key Editor, I have drawn a note on beat 1 with a duration of 3 eighth notes. On the staff, a quarter note and an eighth note appear tied together. I would like to convert this structure into a dotted quarter note.
In the Online Manual there ist this corresponding link:
I tried it several times, it does not work.
Is there no simple command like “Force Syncopation” as known in other note editors? I couldn’t find anything in the manual or in the menus…
If you intend to input an eighth note at the end of the bar (i.e. to have a dotted quarter followed by an eighth), input that note – it’s likely Dorico will re-evaluate the note grouping once the dotted quarter is followed by a note, rather than a rest.
Subscribers on the iPad have access to Notation Options, where you can change how notes are grouped and beamed in different meters by default.
In the free version, that linked page about forcing the duration of notes should work; however, the note in step 4 is important: you must first reduce the duration to a quarter, and then add the rhythm dot. Simply forcing the existing duration won’t automatically consolidate the note into a dotted quarter, because all you’re telling Dorico is to fix the note as it currently appears, ie as a quarter tied to an eighth.
Thank you, I was able to solve the problem with your help.
I had actually neglected to shorten the note beforehand!
I really should have read the text more carefully. But it’s also worded a bit awkwardly in my opinion.
A suggestion for the manual:
Actually, what is written below as a “tip” should be included in the workflow as the first step.
My workflow goes like this:
- select and shorten the note pair in question
- activate Note-Input
- activate Force Duration
- select the desired note value
- enter the note with the keyboard
(If no keyboard is connected, this must be done with the on-screen keyboard).
- The desired note is displayed in the system.
- finally, deselect the note.
p.s.
i’m glad it’s working now. Once again, thank you very much!
I must note, however, that in the scoring application of my choice on the Mac, one single keyboard shortcut is sufficient for this function.
You don’t need to start note input if you’ve already input the note: select the note, press O, press 6, press . (dot).
You can switch which order you do “force duration” and changing the duration, the end result is the same.
Thank You. But then a keyboard must be connected?
I would like to use the app without a keyboard. Only with the Apple Pencil. Prefered Interface for inputting notes is the Key Editor.
No, just substitute those key commands for the equivalent buttons in the UI, as described in the manual.
ok, thanks, i will read it!
(For the avoidance of doubt, I’m referring to the page you linked in your post – each step tells you both the key command and button equivalents for the corresponding step, with inline images of the button mentioned.)
