In Cubase is there a forward/backward (in the stereo image) panning option somewhere? Not just left and right. Is there a stereo spread knob somewhere?
To sum a track to mono, how to? Do I have to put an “Imager” plugin on there, lower it to one band and change it to 0% width? Is that the only way?
Oh, interesting.
I’m asking because WA Pro just came out with a plugin that can do a “forward and backward” panning. Listening to the examples, it does seem to do that. It’s one of the things I don’t know how to do, so don’t know if it’s worth it or not to get the plugin, or if there’s a trick in the daw instead.
Ok. Is there any mono buttons on the mixer tracks, or a stereo spread knob or something? Guess I could just read the manual but I just piled a bunch of similar questions together.
It depends on what you want to do, do you want to make it permanent or leave it open to tweaking, you could also convert (mix down) a stereo file to mono, etc.
I learned it from this track:
Increase the reverb and the sound seems to go back, reduce it and the sound comes forward. If you automate it you can get movement, as in the video.
you can also check the free HOFA 4U Meter, Fader & MS-Pan (Freeware - HOFA-Plugins). It allows pannig into the side signal by holding Alt/Option and I believe they call it beyond left/right. Maybe this could be something you had in mind?
The one I saw is PsychoPan.
They claim it can do up/down, left/right, and distance panning. I’m not even sure that’s possible, without dolby atmos.
I can think of some benefits to spacial effects. I could do skits where I’m both at the microphone but also having a conversation with someone at the other side of the room (Guess I could literally just do that though). And for sounds that start far away and come toward the person. Like a rise+hit crescendo, but not just volume and pitch; spacial rise as well.
I’ll have to try that out, thanks.
Your song example does have neat pan effects. I think they are also doing volume automation though. Maybe a combination of all these tricks creates the overal movement effect.
