FR: Advance caret to next note

I would find it super useful to be able to advance the caret directly to the next note, rather than just the next rhythmic grid position, or selected note value, or bar.

I guess there would need to be a plan in the case of there being no note before/after the caret.

Would anyone else find this helpful?

Yeah, if there’s several rests or a full empty measure to the next note, I’d find that helpful if there was a shortcut or modifier key to skip ahead right to the note :ok_hand:

Dynamics entry is exactly why I thought of this.

Shift-L Space Shift-D

(Maybe escape after shift-L , not at computer right now)

Edit: sorry, doesn’t work

Shift L? Huh? Please explain.

I misremembered.

Thought that entering Lyrics mode would be a workaround.

When in Lyrics mode, the space moves to the next note, so you can enter the next syllable. Unfortunately (for the workaround) the underlying caret or selected note does not move with that ‘lyrics insert position’

To do this for entering dynamics, start note input and use Lock duration (L). Space will move to the next note and you can use shift-D without problem.

Though of course, if you’re entering dynamics, you don’t need to be in Note Entry at all, you can just scroll and click on the next note. (Or drag-select several staves.)

When navigating using the left and right arrow keys, I’ve often wished for a way to bypass the rests, though.

@DanielMuzMurray specifically asked for a way to to this. I’m quite sure he’s aware of all the alternatives.

Which, I guess, is really the point! During one’s initial note entry, adding dynamics would be done as notes are entered. But that interrupts one’s workflow! Once the notes are entered, and going back to add dynamics, since rests don’t usually have dynamics associated with them , why shouldn’t the right (and left) arrows skip over rests? (Or, can there be a way – such as a modifier key to use with the arrow – that makes it jump to the next/previous note?)

Because sometimes one might want to hit enter on the rest and input more notes. But yes, a modifier would work. The logic is already there with the lyrics pop-over.

EDIT: To clarify: Sometimes when I’m writing, I’ll extend the caret across, say, 2 oboes when they are playing unison or chords. but I’ll arrow up/down to continue writing when they break into polyphony. I’ll then use Cmd+g to go back to the incomplete measure and add the remaining notes.

Or possibly something else, but I was referring to entering dynamics as in the Shift-D popover! (Sorry if that wasn’t clear.) Of course, exiting the popover would let you do as you suggested.

Somehow I have it in my head that this worked - apparently it is only for the playhead. Man I’m getting old.

Great suggestion, thank you.
