My abolute TOP PRIORITY FR:
Auto-save while playback is running. PLEASE. The hours I have lost to this…
Maybe make it a switchable option, even, but the current functionality is POOR. Really poor.

You can use the Save command during playback fine last I checked. I think the reason that Autosave is suspended during playback is because it needs to create a brand new .bak file while the Save command writes to an already existing file. And there is enough overhead associated with creating that new file to cause playback problems & interruptions.
Currently Cubase prioritizes playback over file creation. Your request would flip that around to prioritize the file creation over playback. So yeah it should be an option.
In the meantime to minimize losses get in the habit of frequently using ctrl+s, or pause playback every so often (which is good for your ears too).
Nowadays we ALL have SSDs. Save is usually a glitch free operation during playback, and I’m sure an auto-save would be, 99% of the time. So, yeah - make it an OPTION so that we can choose what is important to us.
And sure, I know I SHOULD [and often do] hit save regularly, but that’s not the point of auto-save is it? Sometimes you just get in an edit-groove and forget. I’ve lost over an hour of intensive editing on more than one occasion and it drives me INSANE! It just seems so unnecessary
You lost over an hour? Why don’t you just minimize the auto save intervals to 5 or 10 minutes and increase the number of auto saves in your preferences? I am sure that there are a couple of seconds somewhere in between for Cubase to perform an auto save.
You’re missing the whole point. Auto-save does not kick in while playback is running. And sometimes I run playback continually, gradually moving my playback loop along to perform edits
Please read the last sentence from my post above. Or do you loop, playback and tweak a sequence without any break for over an hour?? Are you sure your interval is set accordingly in the preference menu? Just asking.
Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. If I’m doing VariAudio for a vocal track, plus some manual de-essing etc, it can easily take well over an hour… move loop and edit new section, rinse and repeat - and if I don’t have to stop playback, why would I? [aside from this issue]
My auto-save is set to 5 minutes I think
I never use auto-save, I would rather do it myself. So I have no skin in this game.
I learned a long time ago to ctrl+S often. I’ve even mapped it to a spare button on my mouse (as well as a spare key on my keyboard) to make it easier.
The disadvantage of this approach is that it is re-saving to the same file. So if your Project file gets corrupted, you don’t have a different valid file to use for recovery. Personally I do both - lots of Saves & Autosaves - but then I did have a nasty gradual disk fail awhile back.
This feature request is totally legit, and has been asked for several times over the last couple of decades. So either there is some technical restriction or Steinberg just likes to be mean to their customers. Who knows maybe it will appear in Cubase 15, and maybe I’ll finally get that pony for my birthday. Meanwhile, the OP might consider a minor tweak to their workflow - every so often hit your spacebar, take a breath & tap the spacebar again. That’s all it takes to avoid loosing hours of work. Maybe in the future you won’t need to do that. But right now, in the real world that’s pretty much your only option.
Which is why I also map Save As A New Version to another mouse button - click it every 15-20minutes.
