It would be nice if the default names given to divisis could be customized on a global per-project basis (eg. in engraving or layout options). An instance of this is the default “1” and “2” names given to group 1 and group 2 of the division. Sometimes I’d like to write “div.1” and “div.2” in the staves, but still retain the “1” and “2” next to the sectional staff labels.
This has confused string players in the past, when they thought “1” and “2” referred to “Solo 1” and “Solo 2”. It’s nice to have the ability to customize that individually in Engraving options, but I wish it could be done more globally.
I realize it’s quite an obscure FR, but nonetheless, something of this kind would be much appreciated by orchestral players.
Absolutely agree! The 1 and 2 confuse the musicians. Normally, we don’t indicate numbers in divisi. In any case, we do use them for solos as you correctly mentioned.
It depends on the particular divisi. I think you are assuming it’s divisi in 2, which I agree is most common and not usually labelled. But Dorico must cater for all types of divisi (eg 2 sections plus solo, 2 solos plus the rest, 3 sections, or (my favourite) Elgar’s back desk soli and the rest etc. etc.)
That’s right! And it is great being able to label them as needed. I’ve already used it for a couple of reasons! But normally we don’t use numbers for normal divisi (a 2, 3, 4…) but for solo players or divisi by desks.
Maybe a good solution would be adding non numbered presets as the already existing solo - gli altri or the 1-2 option.
(I know the passage you are talking about and absolutely agree!
