FR: Custom score order

In Galley view I’d like the option to have custom score order,
meaning that the order of instruments could be set different than main score.

This would typically be applied to horn 3 and any interlocking instruments for easy view and editing.

Score order is per Layout.
So you could create an extra layout for this purpose, change the order of the player for that layout as wanted, and use the galley view of that Layout to edit your music

Your main score would be unaffected

Nice thanks!
This works for the permanent stuff, like horn 3,
but not so well for the occupational interlocking.
Edit: Works well for both

Geir, are these instrument changes for the third horn player? I have not heard the term interlocking yet.

For horns in symphony orchestra standard pitch order is: 1, 3, 2, 4
Interlocking: Let’s say oboe 2 plays between clarinet 1 and 2. Oboe 2 is usually written staff above clarinets.

That’s new to me, thanks for the explantation Geir. It seems potentially irritating for the conductor, if instrument order changes during a piece - but there must be a reason why it
is been used.

That’s instrument order, not staff order. The idea of having a layout with horns arranged 1,3,2,4 would be for exploding chords from one staff onto the four horn parts. Presumably the conductor score would have all instrument staves in their traditional order.

Which one would that be? 1,2,3,4? 1,3,2,4? Both are quite traditional (and I would think the interlocked one is more traditional…)

There are various specific traditions for Horns that do not apply to other instruments. Dorico handles these automatically by allowing you to specify custom condensing groups (eg. 1+3 and 2+4)

I suppose, in theory, you could do the same for other instruments, but it would be most unusual.

For compositional purposes, you can easily change the order of instruments in setup. Then, when you get to sorting out your engraving, just move them back to a traditional layout.

For me, the traditional order is 1 & 2, 3& 4 in the score with 1 & 3 normally taking the two highest pitches.
