FR: Less smart tuplets

I believe some background for this feature is relevant.
Afik “Intellegent tuplet input” was a selling point of the early versions of Dorico, proving Dorico was much more advanced than the other competitors.
But, just like tuplets over barline, the use-cases are very few, and it’s most often a cause for errors and problems.

I’m fairly sure that they emphasised “easy” or “powerful” tuplet input; but “intelligent tuplet” doesn’t yield much in Google (other than this thread).

However, Dorico’s tuplet input is very straightforward and easy – if you create the tuplet when you enter the notes.

Adding the tuplet after the fact to existing notes will always have to make a decision about which notes will be incorporated into the tuplet, and how any ‘extra duration’ is dealt with.

You’ve stated that there’s room for extra functionality; and no one is disputing that.

But if adding the tuplets afterwards doesn’t work for you, then until it improves, you’d be best served deleting the notes and adding the tuplet afresh.

Sorry, that’s not working for me as that could be 30minutes of music after. But remembering the Stop Bar is an ok “workaround” until it’s fixed.

It is “fixed”.

OK, after spending more time than I ought, I think I’ve cracked it.

If I enter Note Entry mode, here:

and initiate a tuplet, I get this:

… which is what you want, is it not? The minim in the next bar remains untouched, and an extra ‘third’ rest is created, and you can change that to a note, if you want.

If just add a tuplet outside of Note Entry mode, then Dorico makes the tuplet from the available notes.

Ben, this is obviously fine, but wouldn’t it be cool to have the following, optional behaviour:

Even outside of note entry mode, invoking the tuplet tool entering “x” creates a tuplet of “x” number of notes within the selected duration, having the selection make up the first notes of the new tuplet?

Ah, so that is the magic needed. Thanks!
That works for me. And I understand my previous confusion.

did you ever find out what actually triggers it? I agree with you completely about having a preference to turn it off, as I find it, far and away, the most ridiculous thing in Dorico. And I love Dorico through and through. But not quite sure what the usage for the “smart tuplet”. Just turn it off. In a piece I’m working on today, I couldn’t for the life of me create the tuples without pulling the next note in so erased everything, And rewrote the passage. Then 10 measures later, an almost identical fix in the same piece, worked with without a problem. Not pulling the next note. Totally over my head.
