Hi, i’ve noticed that if i freeze a vsti it sounds “different”, despite of Cubase version.
I mean that the quality is not the same.
It seems to lose something in the frequency spectrum…
Someone else noticed that?
works just as intended for me. Do you freeze with current settings?
Hi Glenn. I don’t mean render in place but freeze.
I’m on Cubase 12, 48khz 24 bit and 32 bit float
Its been a long time since Cubase 12 for me, but I never had any problems with the freeze either from what I can remember.
You can compare the audio output of a VSTi with a Null Test. An identical preset (e.g. from 2 Sampler instances such as HALion 7) is output on 2 tracks. The 2nd track is phase inverted in the MixConsole channel settings.
The 2 tracks are played back normally (not frozen). The signals cancel each other out and the sum is null. Then, the first track is frozen and the two tracks are replayed again. Normally, the sum signal should be null again. However, if this is not the case, it proves that the output signal of the first track has been changed by the freezing process.
Original
Frozen
I checked it that way, but was unable to detect any deviation between the original and the frozen signal, by meters as well as by ear.
Apart from that, a frozen signal is of course always identical, whereas the signal of a played VST instrument normally changes constantly, e.g. due to modulation, effects, round robin or parameter randomization within the VSTi. This can make a big difference when listening to the track.
Thanks ASM! I tried only by ear with some strings library in Kontakt and the difference, for me, is like 2D vs 3D. Maybe it’s just me
As far as the listening impression is concerned, you can also try a blind test plugin (such as MCompare). 'Cause sometimes our ears lie…
