This is an appeal to the music software gods.

I just want to write music in Dorico and for it to playback my Spitfire bbcso pro samples without crashing Dorico randomly every few days. This may be a Spitfire problem but the samples load smoothly enough in Cubase but the expression map issues there are another thing altogether and I’m not sure I’m up to the battle anymore.

Dorico is nearly there and works great most of the time, just not all the time. Something about the audio engine etc etc and meant for sheet music.

maybe I should just use Halion but I invested (£) in bbcso pro which is the sound in my head.

Welcome to the forum. If you’re experiencing a crash, you’ll need to provide the team with a Diagnostic Report, from Dorico’s Help menu. (Ideally, immediately after restarting, following a crash.)

Did it actually crash (i.e. quit), or just hang?

Can you give the exact text of any error messages or alerts that you get?

What computer hardware do you have? PC / Mac, RAM, OS, free space on disk, etc?

A lot of people use BBCSO Pro with Dorico, and as far as I know, it doesn’t usually crash, so there must be something else going on.

If you think the problem is with Spitfire, then you should let them know as well. They will likely also request crash logs and other technical info.

Hi benwiggy, I have 64gig ram , i9 CPU , 2 terabyte internal SSD. Thanks for your feedback , I will follow your suggestions though at the moment I am frustrated by the process of getting things working consistently. If I knew then what I know now I may have not bothered with the pro version of BBCSO. I really thought 64gig would do it but it seems not, I would add more if it wasn’t for the current ridiculous price of ram.

In answer to your question, hang is probably the correct word, sometimes if I leave it it comes back, sometimes it doesn’t. Load times of the library are inconsistent and worst of all stuttering during a passage of semiquavers with just the woodwind and strings, nothing too heavy. I am just using mix 1 , no fancy mike positions. No error messages. I have been talking with Spitfire and they sent me an older version of the player to try which worked well for a couple of days then didn’t, which is why I am a bit frustrated.

64 should be enough, so we can probably rule that out for now.

The diagnostic reports are the best way to help pinpoint the problem. Otherwise you’ll have to do trial and error, starting with a minimal configuration and slowly adding more factors and seeing where it breaks.

What size ensemble are you writing for? I had a VEP template with BBCSO instruments for a large ballet work that was using \>90 GB in Windows, but that was certainly the exception rather than the norm.

With your Dorico file open and BBCSO sounds loaded and active, go to Windows Task Manager, click Performance / Memory and look at the RAM usage. Is it well under 64 GB? If so, that’s not going to be the issue. Is there any other program sucking up an abnormal amount of RAM? Under Performance / CPU is the CPU usage low? Is there another background process using up all the CPU processing power?

Spitfire generally works well with Dorico so just curious if there’s some other process that’s stressing out your system.

To check RAM usage, a quick, scientific, and accurate way is System Informer. It’s free software.

I don’t think RAM is your problem, but System Informer will tell you quickly.

Standard orchestra but certainly not massive tutti passages (just yet). Thanks for your suggestions I’ll give it a chack.

BBC So Pro uses a lot of resources partly because of the large number of microphones. I certainly wouldn’t expect a full orchestra to run comfortably on my system with 64Gb RAM which is why I use the BBC Core and the much less resources intensive Spitfire Symphony Orchestra. Even Core takes an eternity to load for its size. Still, as others have said, you can easily check in the system resources monitor if there is likely to be an issue – perhaps indeed your hardware is up to the task. If so, then as usual first step is the Diagnostic Report as I have rarely found any Spitfire libraries to crash in Dorico.

To be honest I had core running nicely and regret upgrading.
