Full Score vs Drum Set?

Trying to understand the difference between the both. When adding text in Engrave Mode, this text does not display when switching to Drum Set. Conversely, switching to Drum Set and add text, switching back to Full Score, the text, system breaks to do not display correctly.

I think I understand the concept of Engrave which is used to alter and make a final product to publish. But why doesn’t it follow the format of the Drum Set page(s) ?

I’m not sure I understand what you mean, so let me repeat what I understand:
You are in the full score in Engrave mode and add text to the drum set system, and when switching to the drum set part you aren’t seeing the text?

It sounds like you must be adding that text in a separate frame because it’s not possible to insert system text in Engrave Mode. So, if you add a frame to the full score you are not attaching it to an instrument/system but to the specific page of the score, so of course it won’t be visible on the page of the single instrument.

To add system text that is attached to a certain instrument, you need to be in Write Mode, select something in the system where you want to place the text, and then press ⇧ Shift-X. Then, this text will be displayed in every part/score that contains that instrument. You can then modify the position and other properties of that text in Engrave Mode. In Engrave Mode, changes you make only refer to the current page of the current part/score you are editing.

Excellent… yes i always used the drum score in write mode.
I’m confused why in write mode in drum score everything is perfect, but when switching to full score , text, system breaks are not correct.

Sorry for my lack of understanding as of yet.

I understand that having page view in Write Mode can be a bit confusing because it looks kinda similar to Engrave Mode but not quite. I always use Galley view in Write Mode; since this looks substantially different I don’t get confused.

Write Mode is only to add (musical) content, regardless of the looks. Engrave Mode is then only for the layout, not for placement of content. So, you shouldn’t rely on the placement of things in Write Mode, they will be at their default location where they occur in the music (timeline wise). If the objects need to be at a specific position on a page, you go into Engrave Mode and modify that there. If you switch back to Write Mode, the position might be “off” again because things might still be displayed at their default position where they occur in the music but, as said, that’s not really relevant in that mode.

Engrave Mode is definitive for the layout/position of objects, and what you do in Engrave Mode will eventually be how it looks in Print Mode (or on paper/in the exported files eventually).

So, to recapitulate:

  • Write Mode is for content changes. Those changes refer to staves/systems and will be reflected wherever that staff/system exists (score/parts). Layout/position of objects isn’t necessarily correct there, visually.
  • Engrave Mode is for layout changes and those will only refer to the current page of the current part/score. Positions of objects you change there in one part will not affect other parts/scores.

Thank you again for clearing this up for me.

Dorico just posted a 1-1/2 hr video on percussion and drum set notation. I am watching now. Very interesting :+1:
