GA5's 'The Kit' taking up 20.77GB of space!

After downloading 2 updates recently can this be right? & if not, I’m unsure which files are safe to delete.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, this is correct. “The Kit” library is 20.77 GB.

Thank you.!

Sure thing - regarding what’s “safe to delete,” once installed you can delete the actual installation files from your Downloads folder. Note that you can use the Steinberg Library Manager to move the libraries wherever you would like then on a library-by-library basis. Pretty flexible….

Thank you for the info.!
A while back I got in a complete mess with the Strindberg files, so I run scared not wanting to get in that position again.
I have sound files in an ‘OSX’ folder which is in the downloads folder marked Steinberg (I run a Mac). I didn’t put it there. It’s full of vst sounds/groove agent/halion etc. 64GB plus the files in the steinberg application support folder, so it seems a bit of a mess really. Everything works fine, but I feel I’m using up a lot of needless space.

Yes, the entire ~/Downloads/Steinberg folder can be safely deleted. Once installed those files don’t do you any good, and on macOS that doesn’t affect your “Install/Install Again” status shown in the SDA. I’ve got 14TB free and I still immediately delete those files after I update

Thank you. This is a big help to me! I’m not running on a large storage Mac so this is good news.
I’ll let you know when it’s done.

Put the ‘Downloads’ folder files in the trash, checked on GA5 & a lot of the Kits were gone. Acoustic agent ‘Rock’ kit didn’t even show up & Vintage had no kits at all. Put then back & all appeared again, so there’s something wrong?

The default location for the library in ‘Library Manager’ is the downloads folder, which may be part of the problem? Or do I carry on with deleting the /Downloads/Steinberg folder & reinstall the missing or complete lot, changing the target folder to library/application support/steinberg/content/?

 Yes, indeed it is. My recommendation is to put your default Library locations somewhere else. I tend to use the /Users/Shared default macOS folder as the base for all my samples, libraries, impulse responses, etc. The reason for this is (normally) I don’t want to eat up iCloud storage for my libraries, so I don’t want them in my Documents/Desktop or anywhere else I sync cloud storage from. My personal preference is to also exclude the /Users/Shared folder from my TimeMachine backup because if worst comes to worst I can just download them again or restore “critical-but-static” resources from one of NAS devices. But that’s totally up to you.

But yes, I wouldn’t use the Downloads folder for your actual library location, and no, you don’t have to download again. Just change your default location in Steinberg Library Manager (as you can see I have a more complex folder structure for mine):

Then just use “Move” to relocate your your library/libraries to that folder:

You can click the wee checkbox next to “Move” and move them all at one time as well.

Changing the default location will ensure the next time you install a library it will be put in the right place. Changing the default does NOT move your existing libraries - you have to do that too. But note that you can actually put them wherever you want, and they can be different than the “default.” This may be the case if you have a large library you only use occasionally, and only from an external drive. You could set just that library’s location to the external drive and then move it around from computer to computer. All depends on your use case

THEN you can delete what’s left over in your Downloads. Sorry for that confusion - I didn’t even think that you may have set your default location

Dear Thor.HOG,

Fantastic!

Followed your suggestions & everything is in the same place now in a designated folder, after years of it being a mess I know where stuff is!! I’m about to delete the downloads folder!

Thank you for taking the time to walk me though this…
