Garritan ARIA and band score percussion setup problem

I cannot seem to get the percussion parts for a band score to play correctly. I have all my instruments setup in two ARIA Multi players in score order. Dorico handles every track just fine! Well, except for the percussion staves. Only the Snare written line gets played and it has the sound of the Cymbal instead of a Snare Drum. The Endpoint setup doesn’t show separate tracks for the percussion parts I have in the score. I have Snare on one staff, Bass Drum on the next staff and Cymbals on the last staff. The EndPoint setup only shows Snare Drum and no other parts after it.
Does any know what to do? Has this been worked out by anyone? I don’t want to use a drum kit as this is for individual players on each instrument.

If the Garritan sample instrument contains different percussion sounds on different pitches, e.g. GPO “Basic Orchestral Percussion”, then you need a Percussion Map to tell Dorico which sounds play which instruments.

Otherwise, you’ll need to upload the score so we can see what’s going on. (You can save a copy and delete all the notes – it’s the setup that’s important.)

Here is the score (empty of notation) showing the setup for a Concert band. The Endpoint Setup is still a mess when it comes to the percussion lines. There should be a channel after Tuba for String Bass, then Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum and Cymbals. I have the Percussion map for all the Garritan percussion set to Basic Orchestra Percussion.
I hope you can see where I have not gotten the setup correct as now the only instrument that plays is the sound of the snare drum.

Thanks for any help. It is much appreciated.

Your Bass Drum and Clash Symbols don’t have a VST, nor Ex map, nor Percussion map defined.

Weirdly, all your tracks are muted, and unmuting them is a game of Whack-a-mole.

Also, I think you’re using old VST2 instances of ARIA, rather than the newer VST3…? So I can’t check the contents of the VSTs. Are you using the GPO “Basic Orchestral Percussion” sample instrument?

Now, I am a bit lost. I don’t know how to tell if I am using a VST 2 version or a VST 3 version and how do I get the VST 3 version?

I didn’t think that Windows 11 PCs have an ARIA VST 3 version.

First things first: can you get it working by setting the VST and maps for those tracks?

The only percussion that seems to work is the snare drum. The others are silent.
BTW, I had muted everything but the percussion players when trying to figure this problem out and forgot to un-mute them when I saved the file that I sent here. I am uploading the corrected file with everything unmuted. Sorry about that.

It’s the same problem, as shown in my picture above – you haven’t assigned a VST and maps to the Bass Drum and Cymbal instruments.

I guess I am completely ignorant as to what is to be done to get ARIA Multi to be recognized with the correct percussion parts showing in the Endpoint Setup. I setup the score in Setup. I goto the Midi and VST section of PLAY and select ARIA Multi VST. I put the instruments in the ARIA slots and assign midi stereo channels different for each instrument.
All the instruments show up in the Endpoint Setup correctly except for the percussion. The Timpani should be after the Tuba but it skips a channel and is placed by Dorico after an empty track below the Tuba. The snare drum is also shown after the timpani but no bass drum nor cymbal. Here are pictures of what I have tried to do for what I understand about what you have said.

I cannot move anything in the instrument column of Endpoint but I can change the Expression Maps being used and the Percussion Maps. I really appreciate all the help you have given. I am sorry that the concepts are eluding me as to how this is done. Of course, I could just use HALion for the percussion because that seems to work.

  1. Select the Bass Drum Track.

  2. Click on “Track Inspector”

  3. Configure the VST, Expression Map and Percussion Map that you want for that track.

  4. Do the same with Cymbals.

Okay, I did that today. Nothing changed. I have the Bass Drum and I put in the Ex. map: Default
I then put in the Perc. map: GPO BOP. I still only hear the Timpani and the snare drum.
I also noticed that The Track Inspector also shows Port: 1 (which can be changed with an up and down arrow. I also see Ch: 1 which can also be changed. However, the Timpani has its correct channel as channel 7 and the Snare has its channel as channel 8. Bass Drum should be on channel 9 and cymbals should be on channel 10. No matter how many times I try and set them to those channels. They revert back to channel 1. I am assuming those are midi channels and my ARIA Player has the percussion on the channels that I mentioned.
This is exacerbating and I am seriously considering moth balling all my Garritan stuff and buying Note Performer. Maybe I will be able to lower my blood pressure a bit. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

When you say “they revert back to channel 1,” are you talking about their input channel or their output channel? Output should be assignable in the MultiChannel Aria VST. Input is a collaboration between Dorico’s output and Aria’s input slots.

Not sure as I only see the channel listed on the Track Inspector page in the Play section of Dorico.

Or you could just stick with the bundled Iconica Sketch/HSO sounds until you come to terms with how Dorico handles playback with any VST.

If you have not done so, I strongly recommend you watch the Discover Dorico session on Playback Templates.

This will show the basics about Routing Instruments, applying Expression Maps and Percussion Maps and how Playback Templates work. (all of which you appear to struggle with)

There is no official support for using Garritan with Dorico. @benwiggy has done fabulous work creating excellent templates and expression maps, but I think even he would acknowledge they are neither complete (particularly around percussion) nor perfect.

Also there are particular problems using Garritan with Windows…

Hey, Guys! Everyone that helped. I am a bit slow at grasping concepts on newer programming but with all your suggestions, I think I found the answer. The problem was understanding everything in Dorico and how it works. The Track Inspector page seemed daunting and unhelpful when I first looked at it but with your help I just got the band template working correctly (I think). At least the percussion are playing the correct instruments and on the correct channels.

Benwiggy, Derrek and Janus - your patience and suggestions were much welcomed!
