Generate chord diagrams from exact frets in tablature

I can’t find any info on this but I would like to create chord diagrams that exactly reflect the tablature. Currently, it just inserts a random voicing which requires a lot of editing. Can anyone shed some light on this please?

I’ve asked that before and I do hope it’s gonna come in the next update ; so easy to do that in Guitar pro : just pressing A anywhere in the tablature and it displays all the notes being played at the same time in a chord diagram, one of the rare last features Dorico still hasn’t that exists in GP (this and a panel to handle bends more easily)

fingers crossed !

Yes, I am mystified as to why this isn’t a feature. I believe it would be easy to program something like this. It would save me such a lot of work!

I believe “Generate Chord Symbols from Selection” will already set up the shape in the chord diagram to match the notes.

Hi Richard, Yes, you can generate chord SYMBOLS as you stated, but not DIAGRAMS which is what we are referring to.

If you specify that the player for whom chord symbols are shown should show chord diagrams using a compatible tuning, I believe you should find the voicing in the chord diagram reflects the notes from the tablature.

not the case unfortunately

I just tried what you advised and here’s the result (had to google how to show the chord diagrams, as I forgot how to to that… if you guys could move that in the property panel btw that would be much more intuitive than going to setup, right click, choose a tuning -why the hell would I want to show a diagram that’s not in my tuning ??? anyway…- then go back to write mode ; in guitar pro it’s just one shortcut to do all of that ! and it automatically adapts to the tuning the instrument is using)

Plus it displayed automatically all the diagrams for all chord symbols.
Having an option in the property panel would allow us to select only for which chord symbols we want the diagram, sometimes we just want to show the difficult ones for our students for instance but still have the name above the other chords.

I attach as well a screenshot of a feature present in GP that I would love to come to Dorico for a better handling of chords : a chord panel referencing all chord diagrams used, it’s easy to input them back over the tablature whenever we want, and clicking on them when the tab is empty inputs the tab equivalent, making things easy to then create strumming patterns and slashes for instance :

(and, not related to chords, but the bend panel I was refering to for a better and more intuitive handling of bends)

I’m getting different results from you with Generate Chord Symbols from Selection - would you be able to attach your project here?

Relativity.dorico (892.5 KB)
sure here it is
(just don’t pay attention to the drum track it was imported from a MIDI file of my Cubase project and in the process of being cleaned up)

I can’t get it to work. The diagram doesn’t remotely reflect the guitar tablature. See attachment.

I think these are two separate cases.

@Nick_Hollings: in your case I think the issue is that these are chord diagrams that don’t exist in the library, because the stretch between the highest and lowest fret is so large.

@AMazedBrane: I think this might be a bug - we’ll have to look into it. In particular the fact that b.63 is the same shape played repeatedly and it gets it right once suggests something’s wrong here.

Even normal chords aren’t reflected properly.

I think you’re right saying there might be a bug as the first time I tried to do what you and Daniel advised Dorico crashed.
The second time it did that (although it’s not the first project I’m trying to use chord diagrams in and I gave up long ago because how random and tedious it is to get correct diagrams as of now).

Here’s a GIF of how easy it is to do in GP (I input my tab, press A, it suggests a chord name and if I’m happy with it I just press enter, if not I just edit it… the frame rate of the GIF is low but it’s literally a couple of seconds) :

What you mentionned about Nick’s project and the fact chord diagrams don’t exist in the library : the library should be able to use any diagram, whether pre-registered by the devs or custom made by us, which I truly hope will be possible soon…

Would you be able to do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the zipfile here? It’d be good to see the crashlog just in case it’s something different that we also need to fix.

It says the diagonistic file is too big to be attached here, is there an email address I should send it to ?

You can email it to me at r dot lanyon at steinberg dot de.

sent !

Hopefully that crash should already be fixed in today’s 4.3.20 update.
