If I select a bunch of staves and use “Generate Chord Symbols from Selection” I get chords in all those staves, even though “show for rhythm section instruments” is selected.
And “hide for all instruments” or “show in parts only” doesn’t work either.
What am I doing wrong ?
If an instrument is considered a “rhythm section” instrument (Piano, guitar, DB, percussion), Dorico will display chord symbols unless one turns them off in Setup mode or opts for “Show above top staff” in Layout Options.
You’re not doing anything wrong and this discussion came up in an earlier thread: Generate chord symbols from selection conundrum. In my humble opinion the behaviour of Dorico is quite sub-optimal! So never do this Generate-Function if you’re just looking for one chord-name, because it generates a lot of work, hiding all those chords in those systems, you don’t want to show them …
Yeah, this isn’t really implemented in a way that can be used on projects with more than just a few staves in any sort of time-efficient manner. A good workaround is to add a Piano, Select All, Copy, Paste Special / Reduce into the Piano without caring what it looks like, then generate the chord symbols from just the scratch Piano part as it contains all the harmonic information. Delete the Piano after you’re done using it to generate the chord symbols.
