Assign generic midi controller to channel insert.
Select single channel and insert a plugin channel strip - in this case a SSL4000 stereo channel.
Remote midi device ‘sees’ insert strip and works fine.
Link channel to group.
Select second channel in group - remote still sees 1st channel insert settings.
Move insert to second channel - no setting visible to remote at all, regardless of selection.
Summation:
Remote midi device sees 1st channel values in group only,
