Getting NI Battery to work in Dorico

Trying to build a few customized world music percussion instrument sets. Dorico 6, Battery 4 on macOS. I have everything set up according to the Dorico docs. VST instrument, endpoint, percussion map. In Write mode I see the drum pads with my various drums. When I enter notes or press the pads I get no sound from Battery but the input indicator on Battery is flashing. So it receives some message. Don’t know how to troubleshoot this.

Some more info. I can make this work with NI Massive, Steinberg Retrologue. But Battery still doesn’t make a sound.

I’m using the default expression map and General MIDI percussion map in Battery 4. I loaded a factory kit. I’m hearing audio. If Massive and other vst libraries make a sound, you might want to check the various routing options in Battery 4. If you have a DAW available, does Battery 4 work in it? I also find it easy to accidentally click on the solo button of one of the pads, potentially making it seem as though everything is muted or not working.

Thanks. I figured it out after taking a break.

Using Battery for ethnic/afro percussion. However, the reason I didn’t hear anything but saw the input LED on Battery flashing is: MIDI key numbers are transposed by an octave somewhere. In other words, I was testing with key numbers/notes C1, D1, etc. For some reason C1 arrived in Battery as a C0, lighting up the LED but there is no sound. If I use C2 in the percussion map it will trigger C1 on Battery. I checked the Dorico Drum Set map, which uses Groove Agent SE and noticed that all the note assignments are also 12 steps up. Glad I got it to work but don’t understand why the octaves are off.

Different VSTs have different conventions as to what constitutes Middle C (it’s usually either C4 or C3).
I’m no expert on Percussion Maps, but they probably respond to Dorico’s default set in Preferences>General…
Expression Maps can be set individually.
