Sorry if this is a simple fix I’m not seeing … Given the rhythmic complexity of this score, in empty bars, I want to put cue-sized rests that indicate the subdivisions of the time signature as played in the piano part by putting cue-sized rests, instead of full bar rests. I’ve done this in the score, but they fail to appear in the part. How do I make them appear?
Apparently this is linked to the multi-bar rest setting in Layout options>Players>Bar rests and multi-bar rests. If you set the Consolidate option to None, the explicit rests show up in the parts, but obviously that has the unwanted side effect of not having multi-bar rests anywhere.
One way I found to make this work is to add a hidden note on the first beat of the bar in a downstem voice. Place it low enough so that it does not affect the positioning of the rests (or, if the low note interferes with vertical spacing, place it somewhere inside the staff and force the Rest position of the first rest to 0 in the Properties panel). Then hide the note and stem and suppress playback.
But perhaps other forum members will have better methods to achieve this.
You can also enter a text (Shift+X). It works with e.g. just a space, so you won’t see anything but a signpost.
Just one thing: don’t put the text on the first beat, because it wouldn’t break the multi-bar rests, which is what you need.
I knew there had to be someone smarter than me.
I tried the empty text box option but it never crossed my mind to put it somewhere other than the first beat, so I couldn’t get it to work. Yours is the faster option.
Let’s wait and see if there is an even simpler solution ![]()
Split Multi-bar rests in Engrave Mode is possible as well, but it affects all concerned instruments at a given point, AFAIK. So it doesn’t seem ideal in this kind of situation.
Thank you @charles_piano and @Zalde !!
Another solution – not perfect but maybe useful, a bit similar to @Zalde 's solution.
Part:
Score:
The start of each bar has a quarter note, stem hidden and notehead changed to quarter rest. For the 11/8 you would have to add one more rest in the middle of the bar to break the half rest. The division of the rests is automatic, that is in Notation options.
